I have just been in the pet shop and a bloke was buying all the tobacco stalks and telling the shop assistant that he was pairing his birds up this week.

was just wondering when the members on here are pairing up.

I hope all your breeding plans go smooth

all the best

why do people pair up so early :emoticon-0138-thinking:

beyond me first eggs get frozen hatch rate drops , then you add to feed bill with earlier bred young birds , then you don't get weather to let them out , then when eventually get them out there too strong on wing and loose them . But each to there own :) When are you pairing the birds up ???

but why do people breed early :emoticon-0138-thinking:

Gets the babies oot of the way before racin? Gives them a natural hold of the body feathering?

Pairing up early is not all about breeding early ybs, there are many other good reasons for early breeding, but people only seem to look at the negatives, each to their own.

I want my young birds to be as mature as possible come racing as I am looking to race the young birds on widowhood this year

do you put them on darkness then :emoticon-0138-thinking:

I believe they call it natural darkness ;)

They are all sitting on eggs now.

I breed early because I only play young birds and I want them to be te more mature as possible when they begin the races in May.

I take it your a continental fancier ????

Thanks.

Yes, I live in the french speaking part of Belgium (not far from Liège).

You fly a good young bird can you tell us your young bird system ;)

I breed 60 young birds. Nearly 1 bird out of 4 is killed by the birds of prey…

They are in the dark from March to the end of May.

From the 21st June, they are lightened.

I train them more or less 15 times before the first race (15 May).

After 4 races, I remove from the flying team (not from the loft because the partner of this pigeon has to stay motivated) every young bird which misses 2 times in a row.

Sexes are separated on the first week of June.

Males and females are together about 5 minutes before being placed in baskets.

This year, they have never been on the road between 2 races.
