Roland Posted December 7, 2009 Report Posted December 7, 2009 never got a shot on local or world stage, or were way past their best when they got it. This will rack you brains and bring many boxers back to memory I feel / hope.
gangster Posted December 7, 2009 Report Posted December 7, 2009 dave ward im lead to believe alan minter said he was the hardest fight he had
Roland Posted December 7, 2009 Author Report Posted December 7, 2009 Joe Jeanette, Sam Wills, Harry Langford, Peter Jackson, Joe Comasky were all ducked. I thin Jack Demsey has the mantle for ducking each and everyone that had breathe. Most of those above for starters. Said they were 'Wife Beaters', 'Owed Money', 'Was a drunkard' etc. etc. Indeed just look at any of the ranked Heavywieghts he fought .... Yep that done lol. Middleweights were his favourites, and raw novices lol.
Guest strapper Posted December 7, 2009 Report Posted December 7, 2009 dave ward im lead to believe alan minter said he was the hardest fight he had i had a train trip of say 25mins with alan minter years a go ,just b4 the bruno v lewis fight. very nice guy and well mannered. we talked about the fight and he asked what i did for a living,i told him i was an international porn star..in the same breath i told him i was a stonemason/builder...guess which one he believed.
Roland Posted December 7, 2009 Author Report Posted December 7, 2009 What a great left hand eh. Great lightwieght, was British Champ. he lostto Charnley. Fought Carlo Ortiz the great man himself and lost on points. Won and held the title for 3 years after Chanley retired. So he had his chances. I believe he died November 2001. But was a great Brit.
Guest strapper Posted December 7, 2009 Report Posted December 7, 2009 whats your thoughts on tony sibson?...he fought hagler in 83.
Fair Play Posted December 7, 2009 Report Posted December 7, 2009 boxrec for all the information you will ever need
Roland Posted December 7, 2009 Author Report Posted December 7, 2009 whats your thoughts on tony sibson?...he fought hagler in 83. Great, and very down to earth and genuine fighter. His father incidently was a very good pigeon fancier to boot, ... till about 3 years a or so ago. Yes he lost to Hagler in six. Beat Minter of course and lost to Kevin Finnigan .... who was underrated I guess because Chris his brother was a genuine great. Remember when they tempted Sibson to stand in for a short notice Light Heavywieght World title fight ... His answer was simple. 'Why.... I'm a middleweight.
Roland Posted December 7, 2009 Author Report Posted December 7, 2009 dave ward im lead to believe alan minter said he was the hardest fight he had Can't recall a Dave Ward fighting Minter. Know my club mate won the ABA the year before him, and lost in a close bout to him in the Semi's next year. But Dave was way under par as his wife threathen she would hand around if he carried on boxing ... walked out on him the day before the fight and wasn't around etc...
Roland Posted December 7, 2009 Author Report Posted December 7, 2009 boxrec for all the information you will ever need I guess, but nice to recall first, then be opened to being put right I guess lol.
Fair Play Posted December 7, 2009 Report Posted December 7, 2009 Ken Buchanan great champion lost to "Hands Of Stone" Duran who never gave him a return
ch pied Posted December 8, 2009 Report Posted December 8, 2009 Tommy Farr , 1 of the best britain has ever seen .
Roland Posted December 8, 2009 Author Report Posted December 8, 2009 Ken Buchanan beat Muarice Cullen for the British Title and won the world title which he lost - narrowly - on points to Duran. Yes was very unlucky because if he'd fought anywhere else he would have won the fight. Indeed Duran would have been disqualied most likelyy else where. Tommy Farr, great Fought Louis to the line in his world title fight.

Boxed for Clifton as an Amatuer, with the Polacks, Crays,Kennerdales. Was a rough area / club lol. He beat Robert Duran! And this was way before Roberto was in his twilight years. Never knew which Kirkland would turn up. Was either brilliat and out this world, or... Just turn up. He hd a few problems outside the ring. May be able to get a contact number etc. to put you in touch Strapper. But has been a few years back, will ask though for you. Indeed will phone a couple that may have his details.
