Guest bluemorning Posted November 26, 2011 Report Posted November 26, 2011 i was wanting to know people who hopper feed how do they control them ie nice sunny day and some just wont come in .is it the use of trapping mix peanuts etc or do members use other devices to get them in.any thoughts members.
paullock Posted November 26, 2011 Report Posted November 26, 2011 Hello, Ive been hopper feeding my cocks since the end of the young bird season, seems to be working well, when the birds are in the loft I make sure each bird gets a penut if I am in there, so when they are out flying (not hungrey) they know the peanut will be waiting for them when I call them in, there pretty quick getting in now that they are used to it, they dont seem to eat to much when fed via hopper and feel good in the hand.Dont know if this is the way to go during racing though? Paul.

Rooster J. Cogburn Posted November 26, 2011 Report Posted November 26, 2011 Once you get yer birds used to the taste of hemp you can almost make them dance for it,no matter how full their crop is. I've got a big shiny Godfather,Don Corleone tea mug .They only ever see this when they get hemp(not very often at the moment)but if you get them used to the taste of hemp in a recognisable tin or container you shouldnae have too much bother getting hopper fed pigeons in. Use it in moderation though as it almost has the same fat content as peanuts
paullock Posted December 1, 2011 Report Posted December 1, 2011 Forgot to say, Hopper feeding seems to work well for the cocks but I have a real bad time controlling hens, they will roof on the house as its close to the loft, saying that im only going to race Cocks next season as it just seems easier as they behave theirselves for me. im trying 50% / 50% depurative & best allround through to breeding in the hoppers. Paul.
just ask me Posted December 7, 2011 Report Posted December 7, 2011 i was wanting to know people who hopper feed how do they control them ie nice sunny day and some just wont come in .is it the use of trapping mix peanuts etc or do members use other devices to get them in.any thoughts members. good trapping is done by habit and training when they are babies its not really a hunger thing at all trying to train old birds to trap when not properly trained as babies would be a challenge i would think that you would probally need to go to a routine feeding and a routine of letting them out the same time each day
TREBLE D Posted December 7, 2011 Report Posted December 7, 2011 we used to hopper feed beans on a sun, mon, tue then good corn wed, thur, fri flying roundabout,we put a few peanuts in the cocks pots soon as the door was open they shot in, the door was shut, no play time, but if there was one still flying we still shut the door and it would trapp to the corridor, because if the cocks came back out after eaten the peanuts they would play hard to get, the hens drop and run to the boxes no problems.
Guest Tooshy Boy Posted December 7, 2011 Report Posted December 7, 2011 TO MUCH WASTE AND ATRAKS MICE. AND THATS WHAT YOU DONT WANT.//
peter pandy Posted December 20, 2011 Report Posted December 20, 2011 I have a 2cwt hopper on the same lines as BHW page 150 Dec 16th. The only difference is that I have a hinged lid which drops over the feed holes. My system is that it is closed last thing at night and if birds are being trained or released from loft the following day its opened for their return and left open till last thing at night when I feed a heavier mix in trays. This type of hopper ensures very little wastage if any.
bazil brush Posted December 20, 2011 Report Posted December 20, 2011 i would only hopper feed beans as mixed corn is a big no no as it creates a vermin holiday camp.if hopper feeding beans after exercise trap them with trapping mix ie red band etc from sat sun mon tues give them a spoonful of barley with 20% layer pellets wed thurs fri gerry plus twice a day.if only out once a day give them 2 spoons after exercise . this is an ideal system for folk who work long hours and can only get old birds out once a day .im not bullshitting no fancy vits in water just clean water 4 days cider vinegar 2 days honey on race return n thats it .only treat if nessacary and put meds on corn if possible.one other thing put brewers yeast on your after exercise corn sat sun wed thurs fri .honestly dont waste your money on fancy tonics vits etc they get all they need out of the brewers yeast and layers pellets .the brewers yeast is from holland and barrett 1 heaped tspoon to 1 kilo of corn with a bit of veggie oil to make it stick p.s if sending to 250m + give gerry plus from tues
