showman Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 Just wondering what height different peoples' lofts are.....that's the height where your racing nest boxes are.Have been making a few widowhood boxes and like everyone else, I've been making them in blocks of 4. The thought struck me as to why this is ? A block of 5 would be approx. 6'6" high. Your help in providing measurements would be most appreciated, as I can get an overview of average heights.
andy Burgess Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 our race loft is 6ft 2" at the back and 6ft 6" at front . hope this helps ,its also a standard manufactured loft ,not home made.
Babybird Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 if you have them 5 high the pigeons are very reluctant to use the bottom boxes,
Guest IB Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 I think the fancier's comfort will govern the height the boxes. If my bottom box was at floor level I'd need a new pair of knees to get down there, and help from a crane to get back up, so my bottom box floor is 18" off the loft floor. I'd also need ladders to get to top boxes over 5' off floor level, so the floor of top-most box is about my chest height. My boxes are 4-tiers high, the loft is a ^-roofed garage, so everything above top box roof height is also meshed-off. Makes for fairly tame & calm birds.

Guest Owen Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 I do not like the idea of cramming more nest boxes into a parting because you will find that the birds will become overcrowded. Years ago I used the German style boxes because it allowed me to house more cocks. After a few years I went back to the standard boxes and obviously fewer birds in each parting. My results improved straight away. As IB said, you also have to consider your own comfort because who wants to clean boxes that are very low down and besides, as he says, the birds do not like low boxes. These days I do not even fill all the boxes I have available because at the end of the day it is quality pigeons well managed that win races.
