The situation around Moffat is that I am trying to train young birds at the same time as three pairs of Peregrine Falcons are actively training their progeny to kill pigeons. It is a complete nightmare and one wonders at ones sanity in continuing in the pigeon game, it cannot go on forever like this

Of course it makes a difference if you fly pigeons, ;) because if you did, you would feel how the guys are feeling just now with the losses with the peregrines wouldnt you. ;)

All I want to do is fly racing pigeons and as far as possible stay within the law where the peregrine problem is concerned and it does not seem to me to be an outrageous ambition and I am certainly not my own worst enemy and any fancier on this site will confirm how soul destroying it can be to spend months rearing and cosseting lovely young racing pigeons to see them killed.

Walter, your post reminded me of a bit of sound advice (IMO) hidden deep with some RSPB bumff that appeared in BHW a few years ago. Basically we were told to alter our seasons and stop feeding predators. The bits I remember are :

(1) We rear and have our green YBs out at the same time as Sparrowhawk & Peregrine hens are hunting to build themselves up before going to nest. If we bred later there wouldn't be the same food supply, so many nests would fail to fledge anything.

(2) We race & train when whole 'families' are out hunting, or training to hunt. Our racing season needs to be pushed forward to avoid those periods.

We were told how to reduce numbers AND remain within the Law. The weather is changing so breeding & racing a bit later in the year might be no bad thing. I think that's maybe what bewted is getting at, we perhaps choose to ignore good advice because it comes from the 'enemy'.

I agree with you m8, pigeon fanciers are there own worst enemy. We never stick together or solve things as a union, its always left to individuals to do everybodys dirty work for them. This goes for every part of the pigeon sport from running clubs to nationals and now dealing with bop, there are always the majority who sit back and do f...all. Hats off to the workers in our sport

Well summed up Delboy, will make up a document later which can be printed of for pigeonbasic members to take to their club and get them to sign up for latebred training,

no half mesures gentlemen, every club member should be participating at the end of this season, feel that strong about this that if they don't do their bit for the future of the sport they should then by flung out if they don't play ball.

I'm just turned 40 and I dread to think how many members I will be competing against in five years time.

hope this takes aff then gareth and also think wee as a fancy should start to change our breeding times ,well think this should be made compulsary for this sport to survive i know this will get up some peoples noses but we need to STICK together on this as early breeding only makes FAT sparrowhawks :emoticon-0137-clapping:
