are these glasgow race dates West Durham Amalgamation race points and Programme THESE ARE NOT FED PROPOSALS AND ARE HERE FOR DEBATE AT CLUB LEVEL

Historically the WDA race points were governed by the British Rail network and we were limited to the relevant liberation points available.

Following the move to road the WDA raced from the same Towns/Cities as before but as liberation sites were lost we moved away from a general line of flight and we are now jumping both East and West from the East Coast Main Railway line and the A1(M). Both the A1(M) and ECML run South of the WDA and offer us a true line of flight and as the pigeons arrive into the Amalgamation on the same general line week in week out, returning to race points as near as possible to these two main transport arteries will remove the vagaries of differing overfly between Easterly and Westerly Race points.

Currently we are driving approximately 30 miles East of the A1(M) to get to Billericay which costs diesel and time that we cannot afford to waste.

In submitting the race points and programme the idea is to select race points that are as close to the A1 (M) as possible to achieve economic transportation to the race point and to also give the pigeons as long as possible at the race point prior to liberation to rest and take on water.

Logically we need to set and keep to the race programme for a set period of time to give the pigeons time to acclimatise to the race points and also to allow the WDA Secretary to book the sites in advance rather than find they are already over booked with other organisations.

Amalgamation By Law 15A - We need to consider the 200 mile for National by law as currently if the Southern Boundary of the WDA was chosen as the cut off point for 200 miles our historical race points of Stevenage/Wanstead Flats/Rivenhall all would not count!

Given the reduction in suitable race points we need accept that we cannot put constraints in that prevent us racing from suitable race points.

We have a by law governing above 200 miles but does not state 200 miles to a given point.

Greater flexibility needs to be given, if forecast is inclement and prevents the pigeons going, rather than trying to squeeze races in mid week – just delete a race from the programme (apart from Classic races).    Inland race points

Wetherby – if the Top End Feds in the Amalgamation feel Wakefield is to far for their first race if sensible groupings were arranged it should be possible for the longer fliers to race from Wetherby for the first two YB races.

Wakefield – no suitable alternative as Pontefract is unable to cope with Artics, hence WDA convoy would be to large..

Thoresby Hall (Nottinghamshire) – just off the A1(M). Sunday Morning Car Boot sales impact holdover capability.

Newark (Nottinghamshire) – just off the A1(M) 45 mile jump from Pontefract.

Peterborough (Cambridgeshire) – East of England Show Ground, 40 miles jump from Newark acres of open ground and tarmac roads to liberate from. Just off the A1(M), again removes the westerly drive and additional overfly.

Huntingdon Racecourse (Cambridgeshire) – Off A1(M) and again it is about an 18 mile jump from Peterborough.

Ware (Hertfordshire) – going to give a distance approximately 38  miles further than Huntingdon (approx 6 miles further than Stevenage). This race point Easterly of the A1(M) (but 20 + miles West of Billericay!), this will give about an hour less transit time to the race point for the pigeons to rest and take water prior to liberation than our current 200+ mile race point.

Hastings (Kent) – if we are to basket on a Thursday for an Inland National we should at least get the full distance to the South Coast – Hastings gives us a truer line flight from the Coast than Folkestone.   Continental Race points

Consideration must be given to the continental race programme, if the WDA were to race Lillers rather than Arras would it allow us to convoy the NNA and Durham Combine to those points also? This will help to ensure we have full transporters and help all three organisations achieve the lowest priced race costs.

Clermont & Bourges are logical choices given the programme of NEHU Classic races. Alternate options for additional races

The MNFC have a small transporter that can be hired, there is the option of the Yearling Classic race on the Bourges weekend being transported using that transporter, this gives an additional WDA race and the future strategy would be for the Yearling X Rings & Yearling Derby prizes to be flown on this race to make it into a real West Durham Amalgamation Classic.

There is also the option of an additional Channel race from Falaise on the weekend of the first Young Bird race if we seek outside convoying from the MNFC etc. I appreciate this is something the WDA have not traditionally done but it would give another 400mile + race to test yearlings etc. prior to them flying Bourges the following season and give encouragement for people to keep a few Bourges pigeons around them.  Race Programmes 2010 & Beyond  Old Birds

  Young Bird Programme

Consideration is also needed as to the Young Bird programme in the future.

Groupings, racepoints and the number of races.

Feedback to the Amalgamation Secretary is that some members of the Northerly Federations struggle to be ready for Wakefield, Logically the split would be into three groupings. Lowest number liberated first and if any Fed does not wish to be part of the allocated groupings they have a single liberation but receive a higher number.

Historically the comeback races are poorly supported at the end of the season, reduce the programme to 8 Young Bird races and insert the comeback race at race number 7 – this then allows the members the option of dropping back in any youngster that has slipped up early in the season as well as later bred pigeons and then sending them to the Young Bird National the week after to give them a proper test if needed.

Birdage is traditionally down after the Young Bird National and some Clubs do not bother at all with the 9th race, members send as they need to for averages, not because they want to. Finishing the programme on the National encourages members to send until the last race.

Group 1 Tyne & Derwent Federation, Newcastle West Progressive Federation and Annfield Plain.
