Guest Vic Posted July 11, 2011 Report Posted July 11, 2011 Hi guys! Thanks for the heart warming replies after my last posting, having just read them. I only hope that you have had your fair share of success with the old birds this year. Here's a new topic to think about! On some forums, I frequently hear of winning birds that have been down for water, due to their feet being caked with mud. Yet I believe that most of these winners have not been down for water, at all, and the fanciers in question who make these statements should know better, than to demean their gallant winners. As we know, some of our most popular liberation sites, can be rather muddy, with the continuous usage of heavy vehicles. Therefore when our birds are liberated, many are forced down to the ground for a split second, which covers their feet in mud. The bigger the lib, the more muddied birds. Have a look yourself at the many liberation films on the pc. and you will see what I mean. Good Luck to one and all for the YB racing. Regards, Vic.
blaz Posted July 11, 2011 Report Posted July 11, 2011 very good point i have never had a winning bird back with muddy feet.

Glad to see you back Vic, your postings have been missed for some time now!! Never had a winner with muddy feet, however was 7th Open LNRC, 3rd Fed, 1st Club with a cock that came back with algae on his feet, suggesting he had been down at some point for a quick drink, however i've never had a winner with muddy feet.
Tony C Posted July 12, 2011 Report Posted July 12, 2011 I open clocks at club/fed/combines and have come across instances where the winning pigeons rubber had being caked in mud so yes in some instances it must have happened at liberation. I remember years ago an old fancier in my club commenting on he's pigeons going down for a drink, he would say yeah! this pigeon went down at Lincoln (for example) he reckoned he could tell what part of the country it went down by the colour of the mud/clay on the pigeons feet. Bull$hit or not?
john cumming Posted July 12, 2011 Report Posted July 12, 2011 very good point i have never had a winning bird back with muddy feet. lads i had a grizzle hen win last weekend from hastings 493 miles to me and she was down for a drink, her feet were covered in mud john :emoticon-0137-clapping:
Rooster J. Cogburn Posted July 12, 2011 Report Posted July 12, 2011 I put vaseline on their feet when basketting fer the longer races so they look pretty on their return
Roland Posted July 12, 2011 Report Posted July 12, 2011 Have seen birds down and drinking of course... But have seen more often them swooping and flying low and taking in water whilst in flight.

Whilst fishing have actually seen pigeons land in the middle of the lake, take a drink then up on their way again.

Some winning birds at the distance races have been down. But these fanciers I am on about, reckon they have won short races with birds that have been down. At the longer distances I've won with birds that have returned with water weeds, fish line etc. on their feet.
