Guest kslicker Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 I know this is probably another ambiguous question, but, it's kind of wrecking my head. This is my first time to ever race pigeons and I'm starting with young birds in July. They are at 10 miles at the moment and doing well. With the weather recently I could only manage once or twice a week at 10 miles. A guy in the club who is very helpful to me said they need to go at least 3 times a week, even during racing. My question is would they not stay fit from races and flying hour and half around the loft every day. I do intend to step them up to 20 miles at the weekend and at least do 20 miles once a week during racing.
OLDYELLOW Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 I only ever train till i start racing , it all depends on what you want to get out of your birds , you might want a great yb season , get them on darkness hammer them , i doubt many would be good yearlings , so a hard question to answer as i don't know what your aims are , my aim is to get a few races in purely for training and help separate the wheat from the chaff
Guest BRYANBROCK Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 Personaly i dont think you can do enough training if i had the time i would train every day up to 50 miles some say too much training can ruin the birds i think this codswallop they are like the athletes in the olympic games dont see them training once a week now do you as your freind said 3 times a week would be okay as for flying round the loft i would like to have them fly for at least 1 hour morning and night then would consider not training This just my opinion
greenlands Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 I went to a lads loft a lot of years ago and he was winning against good competition hands down.I asked him if there was any secret in what he was doing and he said "no you just have to put time and money into them"I then asked what's the money part, again he replied"don't let them out in the morning take them 20 mile down the road and liberate, again in the afternoon 40 mile down the road and liberate.Never fly them round the loft once you start tarining"End of.Couldn't do it in the area I live in unless there was someione going to work evey morning on the line of flight or not. Lindsayhave seen this type of flying start with many birds they don't keep them for long with hawks and wires these days , there far safer around home you can't see how fit they are 20 / 30 miles away you can around the loft
PIGEON_MAN Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 Must admit the best years I have had with youngsters was when I used to train twice a day,it wasnt really the distant I took them (approx 20 miles)but the amount of times I think that did the trick, had as many as 6 in the first 10 of the fed in one race, nowadays I only train up to when racing starts and no more after that,I still manage a few positions in the club but nothing like years ago.
Guest kslicker Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 Thanks for the thoughts lads. I only have 15 birds so I think I will take the softer approach because I am more interested in racing them widowhood next year.
geordie1234 Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 This year i have only 30 ybs to get me through racing and keep for next year so mines are going to be trained like there is no tomorrow and 2 maybe 3 races well thats the plan anyway lol
yeboah Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 I used to road train the young as much as possible but times and environment has changed since days of old, nowadays they are only educated up to 20 odd miles before racing commences and have more than held there on with the one's that are having the s-- knocked out of them each day but everyone to his on ,I would say the most important two points with young and old for that matter is SYSTEM and EXCELLANT HEALTH Everything will then take care of its self,Good Luck

OLDYELLOW Posted June 23, 2011 Report Posted June 23, 2011 Agree 100% Good Luck with the remainder of your season .Thank you , hope your having a great season too , Basketing for Bourge today am very hopefully for a good fed position , not been trained since first race and not been treated for anything all year or year before , flying there hearts out today so looking good , it's better than the 10 to 15 minutes they usually have been doing but i rather they flew there race at the weekend rather than during the week
