Guest Owen Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 I have two hinged flaps in the front of my loft that measure 1.5 feet X 2.5 feet. These flaps are operated from outside the loft and you can regulate the air flow easily. I got the idea from the Red Rose Loft design on the computer.Owen
lvlasked Posted May 3, 2011 Author Report Posted May 3, 2011 just once i finish the install of my boxs and v perchs again i want to get the ventilation right then get the birds right well ill show pics of the inside befor and after i finsh all my work then ill keep the pictures following as i go along improving it
Guest Owen Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 Adam, yea I am well pleased because I was well off the pace earlier on. The bird I got was a 2YO cock that has already done well as a youngster. The birds are looking really good right now so who knows what they might do.The peregrine is hitting me at the moment. He had a lovely yearling cock and a nice youngster yesterday. He has taken 3 youngsters up to now and it has got the stage where I can not let the young birds out at all. I hope to be able to deal with the nasty git within a week. Fingers crossed or what.Owen

xtccock Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 put louvers at each gable end of the shed about 12" square and about 8" down from apex warm stale air is probably stagnating in roof space and not getting out..if it cant get out then fresh air exchange cant happen ..sometimes its not all about getting stale air out but pumping/blowing fresh air in which is more effective than extracting it.. or change your roof to a pent(flat)and have 2" gap front and back hope this was helpful

Whats it called Cumbernauld Posted May 4, 2011 Report Posted May 4, 2011 Its best to get air in at floor level, this helps keep it dry, and helps inhance the whole environment within the loft. Each to their own, but i find it best for me. Good luck mate
The engineer Posted May 4, 2011 Report Posted May 4, 2011 Although i am a new re starter i bought the loft from a very successful fancier he has put the 2 cages on the front with pespex covers that can be fitted if necessary. He has ventelation at the top front section and top back sections he has also put louvres in the front. In the floor he has put 2 x grills approx 2' square with strong mesh with very small holes. The majority of all these openings can be covered if necessary. The ventelation is excellent combined with this the yb's can get out in the cages and survey there surroundings. As i said earlier i am a new starter however this set was done with ventalation and keeping a dry loft in mind. Hope this is of some help.
showman Posted May 4, 2011 Report Posted May 4, 2011 I would say you're practically there. My opinion would be to cover the 4" gap you have at the back, and fit 2 vents at apex of roof ( 1 on each end ) something about 6" should be fine. I would use 'down turned' plastic vents ( available from ScrewFix )and have 1/4" wire in behind them. OMO.
lvlasked Posted May 4, 2011 Author Report Posted May 4, 2011 ok ill get some vents for the tops guys and ill also add my 2 cages so the birds can look out thanks all
lvlasked Posted May 4, 2011 Author Report Posted May 4, 2011 right all just order 2 small vents for the top of my shed and now im going to carry on with the inside of my loft now

Guest Dorset-lad Posted May 5, 2011 Report Posted May 5, 2011 Looking good. you might want to think about blocking off above the boxes with some wire stop birds going up there
lvlasked Posted May 5, 2011 Author Report Posted May 5, 2011 thats the only place they got to perch about from the 6 v perchs i put up or how ever meny i put there
Guest Owen Posted May 5, 2011 Report Posted May 5, 2011 Ventilation is one of ther most important and yet difficult things to get right. The trouble is that the surounding environment can affect things in a big way. Trees, buildings and even hills can all affect things. The important thing is to have an air flow through the loft from top to bottem. What ever you decide to do, you will need to try it out and adjust things from there. I sware by the avairies I have in ther lofts because the birds spend a lot of time outside in the sun and fresh air. My problem used to be the Cocks because they are inside all day. I opened up the floor and built a four inch gap along the apex of the roof. Job done.
lvlasked Posted May 5, 2011 Author Report Posted May 5, 2011 im adding vents to the top of the shed and i got the 4inch gap along the top of the boxs and im remove the windows and build my 2 cages over the next fews days hopful so that should improve my air flow and fresh air into the loft just thought id post the work i dont so far inside the loft
