JohnQuinn Posted April 28, 2011 Report Posted April 28, 2011 (edited) Hen Sparrow Hawk attacked my doos at the loft today, young and old birds out together and it missed everythingThis was the first attack this year but i was hit umpteen times last year. Anyway, this happened at 2.45pm and it seems to always happen to me around 2.30pm give or take. Does anyone else find they are attacked at this time of day or Consistently at a different time of day?? Edited May 3, 2011 by JohnQuinn

Rooster J. Cogburn Posted April 29, 2011 Report Posted April 29, 2011 I was told they had a hunting route and that they'd come by near enough the same time each day.Have to say I've found this to be a complete load of B***ocks. My doos are on an open loft and I've had visits here at all times of the day. Basically they come whenever doos are out and they fancy their chances.

I've even lost birds to her when they are in aviaries; they fly into the loft so fast and in such a panic that I’ve found three with broken necks on the loft floor in the last seven years.
Guest IB Posted April 29, 2011 Report Posted April 29, 2011 I know for years that I'd one that came across twice a day at 8am and 6pm. Made the point then of getting the birds in before she passed over. Don't think that one is still around, but got quite a shock in the winter months when one came across once around 6.30am while it was still dark (I'd the flipping lights on to see) and again walking up the road about 6pm, saw it once coming over a nearby rooftop (a pouter loft there), then fly across the road toward my own house roof and loft. So they do appear to me to be creatures of habit, which can be their undoing, since if they make a kill or have a near miss, it's near guaranteed it'll be back the next day, same time, same place.

Spoke too soon with this one, the day after the attack i noticed a doo that had been gifted to me by my friend Shug Harkin had a drooping R wing, it never recovered and didn't eat 2 days runnung so i had to put it down, it was a VERY well bred young Ck and full of himself before this. On top of that a wee Blue had vanished too, seen it next morning then again this morning when it landed on top of the loft but an Old Ck chased it and i had to leave for work. That's 2 losses to that one attack and that was it MISSING them!! What chance have we got>???

I think BOP watch and get to know where and when birds are out, if you let your birds out the same time each day Mr hawk knows where and when to get a feed,
JohnQuinn Posted May 3, 2011 Author Report Posted May 3, 2011 I think BOP watch and get to know where and when birds are out, if you let your birds out the same time each day Mr hawk knows where and when to get a feed, I'm beginning to think if they come across you even Once they remember and cruise past every day in the off chance the doos are out.

billt Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 yip thats what they do they cruise roond there territory area and if your oot when they pass you yer had itMine are on open loft and I rarely get hit, I'm in the wilds in West Wales surrounded by forestry and have every BOP going here, I think mine are that sharp and not an easy take so don't have a regular visit

Guest bluemorning Posted May 5, 2011 Report Posted May 5, 2011 i use a wire cage for youngsters to view the outside of loft and also get use to bob wires untill they can fly round.not seen our spar female at nest now so unless we get a unpaired female about im pretty safe.the spars soon learn what time you let your birds out and will visit you at these times vary the times as much as you can when she dosent get a easy kill she will turn her attentions elsewhere but she will drop in now and again always be at your loft dont leave the birds unattended becase she will sit in a tree watching to ambush her prey if you leave your loft for 2 mins thats all she needs hope things improve for you lads
