yeboah Posted March 15, 2011 Report Posted March 15, 2011 Well wehn we got our wee terrier it was i used to hold a pigeon right in front of its mouth and if he went for it he got a slap on the head no he hates the sight of doos and wont go near them! some may think its cruel but it was the quickest and easiest wayHave taught any dog we have had just the same they learn very quickly unless they are stupidMy daughters dog that we have at present spends nearly 24/7 with us ,take it into the loft at feeding time both the birds and dog have now got used to each other and they sense that it hates cats even more than they do got her at local canine rescue centre as a pup she is now 20 months mother was a staffordshire father a rhodesian ridge back she is not that big but built like a s----house ,she is my best-est friend

Guest Owen Posted March 16, 2011 Report Posted March 16, 2011 If you are serious about retraining your dog, this is how you can do it.You will need the following. A clicker, some pieces of of chicken cut up small, A pot or a small plastic bag to put the chicken in.You first have to make sure that you do not leave food around and no-one gives him treats. When you feed him let him have the food for about 5 minutes and then remove it. Feed him once a day only.Give him a click followed by a piece of chicken. It is important that you get the timing right. Click then chicken in quick succesion. You will need to do this quite a few times so that he associates the click with the reward. It is called shaping. When he has the idea, take him to a spot near the pigeons. Let him show interest in the pigeons say "Leave" and immeadiately click and reward. Do this two or three times and walk your dog away. When you give the command, do it in a quiet firm tone. On no account raise your voice. If you think the dog is likely to be difficult have him on a lead until he understands what you want. Under no circumstances leave the dog loose near your birds until he has understood what you want. If you need to work with the pigeons, put your dog somewhere safe until you can give him your full attention, during the training period. The bonus is that when you have learned the technique you can teach your dog to do many things and both you and the dog will find it fun. This is because you will have learned to teach and better still your dog will have learned to learn.
