T_T Posted February 16, 2011 Report Posted February 16, 2011 Does anyone know of a short Pigeon DVD that I could get hold of to gain the interest of some Primary/Junior school pupils. I have been asked to give a talk and an insight into our sport and what we're all about. I thought they would much rather look and listen to a 20min DVD than look and listen to me. Once the DVD has finised, I could then complete the lesson.

Because the children 'clapped' the animals the fear was this could spread e-coli. Owners were at pains to point out that they had hand-washing facilities there, that didn't matter, visits were stopped. Only last year we had the H1N1 flu pandemic and what was the advice to stop spread ? Basic hygiene - 'wash your hands'. Missed chance to introduce children to animals AND teach them basic hygiene.
kelly tom Posted February 17, 2011 Report Posted February 17, 2011 I do 2 talks every year to the children about pigeons, year 3 and 4 we talk about the pigeons and the messages they carried, year 5 and 6 we talk about the pigeons in World War 2.I always take a few birds in and some sqeakers,i also take my Ets system in as the chilren are fascinated by the technology, after the talk i always release a basket of birds, the only dvd i have shown the kids is Valiant and that is usually shown by the teachers the next day.I work in the school and the head was talking about getting some chickens and i have convinced her to get a small loft from RV Woodraft and keep half a dozen young birds in it.The teachers and kids love to see live pigeons and are fascinated by them.
OLDYELLOW Posted February 17, 2011 Report Posted February 17, 2011 Im sure R.P.R.A supply Info packs which could also be helpful if you contact them Usually a carrier bag with leaflets / info kids can take home
kelly tom Posted February 17, 2011 Report Posted February 17, 2011 OldyellowYou are right the RPRA supply loads of stuff free of charge,Karen James sent me pens, posters ,balloons and loads of other stuff to hand out to the children. When i first started the talks they were scheduled for half an hour but they went on that long that now we star at one oclock after lunch and finish at three fifteen when the school closes. The classes are now all called after birds eg Penguis,Eagles,Ravens and of course myself and the cleaning staff are the Pigeons,it great what a bit of PR can do for our image, this year i have entered 2 birds in the Emerald Classic one loft race so the teachers and kids will be following their progress.

T_T Posted February 18, 2011 Author Report Posted February 18, 2011 OK, Decided to take the real things along with me , birds, clock, ringer, etc and talk them through the messaging service through the war years up to ETS today. Could be an afternoon session. Still waitng for confirmation from the Head Mistress as to whether her Governors will allow the talk. Fingers crossed.

Guest Owen Posted February 18, 2011 Report Posted February 18, 2011 I used to take a variety of animals and birds to the local Primary School complete with a sheet of tarpaulin to guard against accidents. The children used to love it and still talk about it 20 years later. These days it would require a Risk Assessment and I doubt if they (The Health and Satety Clowns) would allow it at all. Sad, because I reckon that the kids would gain a great deal from it.
