Guest G.Drysdale + son Posted February 5, 2011 Report Posted February 5, 2011 I was told by a PB member to start using nest felts.I have mostly used tobacco stalks so i got nest felts yesterday is there any benefits from using one or the other,Thanks
billt Posted February 5, 2011 Report Posted February 5, 2011 I think using felts is for the benefit of the fancier, stalks are for the benefit of the birds, especially the cock birds that enjoy nest building
fletch Posted February 5, 2011 Report Posted February 5, 2011 with nest felts if a bird doesnt build a good nest you will have plenty of cushion for the ybs when they hatch
billt Posted February 5, 2011 Report Posted February 5, 2011 Then why not both, felt for a base and stalks to keep the cocks happy and fit, if you were on open loft as I am you would never have a poorly made nest

korhil2 Posted February 5, 2011 Report Posted February 5, 2011 i use three ? , nest felt then shavings and then tobacco stalks for the cocks to carry , works fine ,
ovy1255 Posted February 5, 2011 Report Posted February 5, 2011 i find to keep nest bowls warm easy to clean and bird friendly [no sweating] i put shavings in the bowl then coconut nest felt then loads of straw added to the loft floor and topped up at regular intervals, even tho i breed early the young are in my opinion clean healthy and contented.[i always use clean straw]

ovy1255 Posted February 6, 2011 Report Posted February 6, 2011 not at all i always use straw from pet shop not direct from farm never had any trouble .
scottym7 Posted February 6, 2011 Report Posted February 6, 2011 I use nest felts every year along with straw from the pet shops and never had any problems, what i do with the straw is put it a poly bag in the microwave for 20-30 seconds and if their was anything hiding away the micro kills it.I do use stalks but not abig lover of it. Guest geordiejen Posted February 6, 2011 Report Posted February 6, 2011 good idea scot i never thought of putting stalks in the micro to kill any beasties lurking within.i could also put my pigeons in the micro to kill the lice save a fortune on one drop.
Guest IB Posted February 7, 2011 Report Posted February 7, 2011 I use nest felts + pet shop straw. Birds still build using pine twigs they bring in from garden. The advantages for me are warmth and circulating air, and it gives the youngsters feet something to grip.
boxer Posted February 7, 2011 Report Posted February 7, 2011 where do you find the cheapest for dandy nests and nest felts
