The victim's family has been informed of the death. A spokesman for Task Force Helmand said the soldier was helping "to provide a safe and secure environment for the local population, when he was hit by an explosion" A total of 350 UK military personnel have now died since operations in Afghanistan began in 2001. Some 309 of them were killed as a result of hostile action. A further 41 are known to have died either as a result of illness, non-combat injuries or accidents. Edited January 26, 2011 by sapper756
