pigeonman007
Hi, side of my loft is just under 6ft in length. I am wanting to build breeding boxes to go on this wall. I can get 9 in there which would be a size of 22"long x 15"wide x 16" tall. Would this be big enough for them. I envisage shutting each pair in the box for a couple of days each week during the lead up to pairing and hope this will help them bond but not sure the boxes are going to be bigh enough. Other way I can do it is have 6 on that wall, each one being about 32"long Ideas welcomed
cemetary
Thats enough space for them mate, your boxes dosent have to be very large, as long as you watch that they dont stray next door into the neighbours house.
Guest asha
your better off binning a few pairs, and have the 6 boxes instead.More fresh air, more space ,less stress for the oldbirds, less stress transmitted to the squabs. REDCHEQHEN
If your loft is 6 feet wide - how long is it?
Guest IB
It pays to take time thinking out the design of sections, cos once you cut & build, you are stuck with it. May sound silly, first look at the dimensions of the type of nest box front you intend to use, and build your boxes to fit them. It's easy to build boxes, the fronts are a bit harder and maybe it's best buying in the plastic ones? Does the thought of 18 old birds and maybe 18 young birds all housed together on a wall 6 foot wide sound right to you? When the hen is not sitting, the last place she wants to be sat is in the box. Where will the birds not sitting perch? Have they got perches in this section? And thinking of your own comfort, will the bottom boxes be raised off the floor, or will you be down on your hands and knees balancing on one arm while stretching with the other to catch birds at the very back of these boxes, and just out-of-reach? pigeonman007
Hiya The loft is 12x6, I have divided it in two. one section has 30 box perches and the other section just has some plastic v perches at the moment. I was going to use the back wall of this section for breeding boxes and the side wall for v perches or box perches. Youngsters will be put in the other section away from the parents once they are weaned. If I have 3 tiers of breeding boxes on the back wall that gives me 2ft from the floor to the first level of breeding boxes
