greenlands Posted November 5, 2010 Report Posted November 5, 2010 Hi mate,I use them after treating for anything, especially when the birds have had wet droppings.I give them to the birds on returning from a race, also when breeding maybe two or three times a week. There are a few on the market I opted for Electro B.But also have Harkervit-plus which I use the odd time. http://pigeons.taylorschoice.co.uk/search/results.php?s=electro+b&submit.x=22&submit.y=9 Lindsay
OLDYELLOW Posted November 5, 2010 Report Posted November 5, 2010 i only use after racing on return from race , or after treatment where body loss has occured
alex young Posted November 5, 2010 Report Posted November 5, 2010 I use as most people do,after a race,in hot weather and also when breeding as some birds crave salt and can be "wet feeders".
OLDYELLOW Posted November 5, 2010 Report Posted November 5, 2010 I use as most people do,after a race,in hot weather and also when breeding as some birds crave salt and can be "wet feeders".giving salt to wet feeders would make the problem worse , salt creates thirst hence why pubs used to give salted peanuts on the bar so you drink more , birds that pump ybs by giving too much water create wet boxes and inferior ybs , i find that it's usualy inexperienced breeders that do this mainly yearlings , i find that giving a feed pot in there box usualy sorts this out rather than using electolytes

Guest IB Posted November 5, 2010 Report Posted November 5, 2010 There was an article and a letter in BHW a few months ago , Rod Adams, Wim Peters & Gordon Chalmers all said there is no point in giving electrolytes to healthy pigeons. I think because human athletes use electrolytes to replace lost salts folk think it will do the same in pigeons. The difference is that humans shed salt & water in sweat, so that needs replacing. Pigeons don't sweat, but they do lose water in other ways, so its water they need , not salt.
OLDYELLOW Posted November 5, 2010 Report Posted November 5, 2010 my water doesnt contain any salt its fresh clorinated water , not brakish water ??? salt is actualy poisonous in large quanitys , pigeons should get enough natural salt through the mineral pickstones we give them
alex young Posted November 5, 2010 Report Posted November 5, 2010 Interesting thread, even vets disagree on this one, here is an extract from Pantex veterinary health schedule. "After youngsters transfer from milk to solid grains, they may become affected by diarrhoea. This, among other things, because the parents are consuming more water.Treat with Electrolyte in order to avoid and treat this problem".
gingell Posted November 5, 2010 Author Report Posted November 5, 2010 that was very interesting thanks
OLDYELLOW Posted November 5, 2010 Report Posted November 5, 2010 well if the birds are getting filled up with water then there parents are giving too much water , usualy this is a sign of canker imo , lets say they needed more salt you add it to the water there still going to drink even more water still , they need to pump the ybs with plenty of protein not water
alex young Posted November 5, 2010 Report Posted November 5, 2010 that was very interesting thanks This may be of some interest,Google, PigeonNetwork.com and click on Considerations during Breeding.atb.
