Have used the kiln sand for around 6 months after a tip from Dovescott and I'm very pleased with it. Don't have any problem with damp at all so your loft must be leaking somewhere. I seive the sand every day except when I'm on the day shift (12 hours) in winter but just because that's the way I like it and it only takes 10 mins. I prefer this to bare boards but purely cosmetic as I like the look of it and the birds think they're on their holidays(evil)

I only changed from sand in the aviary because we split it into three sections a slabbed it at the same time :)

hempcore is basicly the stalk of the hemp plant which is grown on licence unlike its other herbal use by druggies is a very dry product and used as horse beding , it smells great and composts easily therefore easier to dispose of ill find a link for this product :)

Vallance put me onto Hempcore about a year ago I put down Stalosan then bedding lift off excess droppings give it a turn over and dry as a bone then sprinkle some more Stalosan think "Dovie" has roughlythe same setup

Sand looks nice but it is really cold in winter for the birds feet and if it gets wet it is hopeless as it won't dry out and is a ton weight to get out, then someone told me it harbours cocci so that was the end of that.I have used the easi bed now instead for about 4 years and that suits me,I still pick all the droppings off the top every day though. It should be remembered though that using floor dressings of any kind are not an excuse to not clean out as I have known one or two to think and those that do the deep litter method properly will tell you that they still have to mentain the floor correctly.

Good thing about easybed and hemp core you can mix them, put Stalosan f  through it, as it really does work and stops any smells especially ammonia also the bad bugs :)

thanks for the info and advice everybody :)  ive ended up clearing all the sand off of the loft floor as it just seemed damp all the time   when i cleared it out i noticed that the damp was only in the sand in areas that i walked on but in an area behind a door and also under some nestboxes the sand was bone dry?  i can only think that the damp was being transferred from my boots onto the sand as i walked through the loft as we,ve had loads of rain here :(  i think i will give easibed a try and also check out the ventilation at floor level when i get a chance at the weekend      kev

ps  does hempcore come in chunks or is it small like granules?

Maybe a job for a pair of loft shoes. At least anything you pick up on the soles stays within the loft.

Must admit to coming round to hemcore, plus points for me are that it is (supposedly) dust-free and contains citronella a natural insect-repellant.

I may have actually seen it in one of the Fed's baskets looked a bit like grass to me  :) no pun intended.  :) Have seen easi-bed at my supplier and in the Feds baskets and I don't like it - looks too easy to eat for my liking, and so-called dust-free woodshavings in Bedmax is anything but dust-free as you'll plainly see from the clouds of dust raised by birds in the baskets.
