Delboy Posted October 31, 2010 Report Posted October 31, 2010 Interesting to read that they are acting like owls and attacking at night time.
geordie1234 Posted October 31, 2010 Report Posted October 31, 2010 anno mate i watched a programme and they showed you footage of them hunting and eating pigeons at night and they even found some african grey tail feathers in the nest that was in london they were
Blue Chequer Pied Posted October 31, 2010 Report Posted October 31, 2010 I welcome this and think this kind of info could work against the over-protection of raptors. When you read some of the birds they have preyed on they are themselves dwindling and becoming rare and if they peregrines are found to be guilting of depleating their numbers they will come under pressure and the protection may be relaxed (hopefully). Interesting that they have started hunting nocturnally though!
Guest Hjaltland Posted October 31, 2010 Report Posted October 31, 2010 Thankfully we dont have many problems with peregrines here ... but check out this pic my son took the other weekend of a merlin snacking on a goldcrest.. Merlin http://www.davegiffo...p?showimage=408 PS hope you dont fine it too distressing..
Guest Owen Posted October 31, 2010 Report Posted October 31, 2010 In a contribution on here we had a debate about birds that are classed as vermin. I said then that I think that those who like to shoot vermin should get rid of the ferel pigeons in the towns and cities. These ferel pigeons are an important source of food for the peregrines and I reckon that if they were removed the peregrines would be forced to leave the urban areas to hunt at least. Then the fact that they are taking genuinely rare birds would be bound to have a negitive affect on public opinion. It is only just recently that the so called experts have learned that peregrines hunt by night and that they are taking such a wide variety of prey. Any time now they will also learn that peregrines are a hygenic time bomb. They leave rotting bits of their prey all over the place and frequently drop heads and feet to the ground. It must be unacceptable to have rotting bits of bird landing on our paved areas in the towns and cities, not to mention the rotting carcases that are left on and around the nest sites.
