lenton1163 Posted September 12, 2010 Report Posted September 12, 2010 how can you tell the sex of a pigeon
JohnQuinn Posted September 12, 2010 Report Posted September 12, 2010 how can you tell the sex of a pigeon Difficult to write a definitive answer to this question, if you know an experienced fancier near you i would invite him round for his opinion on your birds. There is a fail safe way of sexing them by balancing them upside down in the palm of your hand but try as i might i canny get it to make sense when i write it down. Its one of those ones you have to have the bird in your hands to explain it properly. There was a thread on a while back that had a video of what i am suggesting on it, maybe if someone knows where to find it they will post it back up for you.
lenton1163 Posted September 12, 2010 Author Report Posted September 12, 2010 that would be great if anyone has the link can they post it please

I think I saw what you mean on a video years ago John.Cannae mind the guys name exactly, hes a Pau winner-McKee or McGhie??something along those lines If its a cock it will be able to flip itself back over and if its a hen it won't? cheers
gd Posted September 12, 2010 Report Posted September 12, 2010 the ones that lay eggs are the hens , unless you believe a recent thread concerning a bird that Darren Peters bought from galaxy lofts that magically changed sex lol
lenton1163 Posted September 12, 2010 Author Report Posted September 12, 2010 can you tell the sex by looking at the pigeon

If it flips itself upright its a Ck, if it stays in your hand as if sleeping its a hen.

I tried it in past.wasn't sure if i was doing it properly Is it only going on the strength of the doo ie a cock should be stronger than a hen or is there another physical reason for it? PS not trying to be smart or cheeky just wondering
clayton moore Posted September 12, 2010 Report Posted September 12, 2010 Sex of a pgeon can only be seen if the pigeon has a red hue.Egs Mealys reds look at the tails cocks have a black splash hens have a brown splash. HENS can also have a blue splash which does look like black. So be carefull.Any colour of a pgeon bred off two reds or two mealies or red and mealy that is not red is a hen.
JohnQuinn Posted September 12, 2010 Report Posted September 12, 2010 I really don't know why it works, just that it does. My guess is it has to do with physiology of the hen but i don't Know.

I'll try and get a hold of that video again, not saw it in years. Can mind he had a way of putting his pigeons to sleep as well that was funny(not the big sleep obviously). Two or three other good things on it
fred smyth Posted September 12, 2010 Report Posted September 12, 2010 Is this the one? 1st time i seen this looks good is it 100% .
sgwbrown Posted September 12, 2010 Report Posted September 12, 2010 I'm not sure, but I had seen it before on an earlier post where there seemed to be lots of experienced folk suggesting it was pukka. From Johns earlier description I thought it was this clip he was referring to and TBH if he believes it works thats good enough for me.
lenton1163 Posted September 12, 2010 Author Report Posted September 12, 2010 this video keeps freezing so ill have to try it on my moms laptop 2moz

Thats the one i was referring to, the only thing about it is the guy balances the doo Up his wrist, i prefer to balance the doo Across my hand that way it canny use its tail to right itself. It is 100% accurate if you master it
Rooster J. Cogburn Posted September 12, 2010 Report Posted September 12, 2010 Is this the one? Its not the video I meant but its the same thing Couldn't remember the guys name earlier. Its John McGee he won the NFC Pau race in 1990.Not saw the video in years but at the time I thought it was brilliant.

Arite Stevie well done today I saw something that if the the two outside toes are the same length at ringing then its a hen if they're not its a cock.Never really payed too much attention to it but the ones I have took note of have turned out to be correct.Dunno if it was just a coincidence though might take note of a few next season.

Aye thats the one Lewis. I might gan roon and ask wee Dickie the night. Hes had a stroke the wee man but still loves the doos.
symbol_of_hope Posted September 12, 2010 Report Posted September 12, 2010 Well you racer guys have it easy I reckon. Race-birds are mega easy to sex on sight, really distinct to my eyes. It's the show pigeons where it gets all ambiguous. The size and shape of both wattle and head are probably best indicators for me. I know men of 50 years experience though who still find some birds hard to call so I guess there is no real trick to it.
micko and jack Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 i have had experanced fanciers racing and show and they all found it hard to sex fantails each had a different way some said the shape of the head others the lenght of the toes and others feel for a gap in the vent bones (i think that was the name) anyway im sure you all know where and another friend told me he could sex them as chicks by looking at their backside a smiley or a frown dictated the sex (but he could have been mixing i never asked him to prove that one)and another said it was just to do with general body size shape and weight and last but not least another said the cock will do a full turn when trying to pair, a hen half a turn but its a bit later at the pairing stage im still none the wiserseriously if you get a 100% answer please PM in case i miss it mick
