thomasd Posted August 19, 2010 Report Posted August 19, 2010 I got swab test done 2day and i have abit of canker today i gave my birds metronidazol norman 250g canker tablets will my birds be ok for saturdays race this week
Roland Posted August 19, 2010 Report Posted August 19, 2010 Yep. Mind how often / times have you used 'metronidazol' I t is advisable to change after any remedy is use twice... 3 times tops as Canker quickly becomes immune to any treatment. Naystatin I'm not so sure about. But any other it pays to change, and remember there are nearly 30 different viarants of canker, so some remedies may well be use to and no longer have much effect. Now the good thing about a mild dose of canker is that it keeps other strains at bay and is in effect really no bother to a bird whatsoever. However if pumping out and around the beak, then of course it is way too far gone and should have been treated earlier as the mild form isn't working of course. But no matter how bad, it can be quickly sorted still.
Guest mick bowler Posted August 19, 2010 Report Posted August 19, 2010 Did you give each bird a whole tab???
thomasd Posted August 19, 2010 Author Report Posted August 19, 2010 ive never used metronidazol norman before the racing i used Flagy tablet got them swab clear as a bell then 3 weeks into racing i used cankerex plus i used it only in the morning first feed then give the water for second feed done this for 3 days then i done swab 2day they had abit of canker so i bought metronidazol tablet i gave them 1/4 each today so they sould be alright for race on saturday then. no not a whole tab 1/4
Guest mick bowler Posted August 19, 2010 Report Posted August 19, 2010 Only my opinion but i think you over medicating them. Three times in a short space of time seems a bit excessive. The more you do it the more you have too. They should only need doing couple maybe three times a year, unless there is a problem.... Flagyl is Metronidazole, the Normon one i take is from Spain?
thomasd Posted August 19, 2010 Author Report Posted August 19, 2010 i dont use unless needed the tranporter seems to be the problem for the canker level this is all i treat i tred sticking to cider vinger and garlic it helps one thing about me i stay away from the medicating i checked my book i last treated on cankerex plus 4 weeks ago and i only give them a drink on the morning feed with me give my birds Metronidazole 2day sould they be ok for saturday
Roland Posted August 19, 2010 Report Posted August 19, 2010 I treated before mating up .... Can a booster 2 weeks a go. Shall have a looksee come next March / April when paired up..In the mean time observing them in garden, of loft / roof tops alerts me to any ailing,,, JM.
Wiley Posted August 19, 2010 Report Posted August 19, 2010 i only treat for canker when needed, like roland the way there around the loft will tell me, and also every now and then ill do the torch test

Guest geordiejen Posted August 21, 2010 Report Posted August 21, 2010 i dont see much canker in my birds but i have metronizadole if needed.i dont give treatment for canker but was just wondering ig its stress related.
Guest IB Posted August 22, 2010 Report Posted August 22, 2010 i dont see much canker in my birds but i have metronizadole if needed.i dont give treatment for canker but was just wondering ig its stress related. A few of the pigeon vets write that they use canker & cocci levels to judge whether a bird is under stress, they say rising levels are a sign 'something' is working on the bird. The next step isn't as you might expect, treat for canker and cocci, but to find out what is really ailing the pigeon, and treat that. The meds deal with the main illness, and the bird deals with the secondary ones (canker & cocci) which return to normal background levels. Carrying these background levels are also said to ensure the bird's immunity against them, and they also act as warning indicators, as already explained.
thomasd Posted August 22, 2010 Author Report Posted August 22, 2010 well got 100% returns 2th club not sure what im in on the derby got 25 birds 20 mins from the first bird so very happy with that the canker treatment i gave them on thursday was not a problem.

That is the best answer to ANY query i have read since i joined the site. All you men who randomly treat birds should pay heed to the message in this post, FIND THE CAUSE, don't just keep spending time and money to cure something that can be prevented if you open your eyes!!! WELL DONE IB.
