Hi all.

On saturday the 24th of july 2010 i had the please of attending the liberation of the welsh north road youngbirds from swindon. First i would like to thank chris coleman and his convoying team for the opportunity to visit such a sight.

So this is my report.

I arrived in swindon at 7am and met with chris and his team in a lay-by across the road from the liberation site. The transporters were parked in a well shaded area out of the way of the morning sun. All birds looked really well and all birds had water present and had been watered hours earlier. I was very impressed by the way the team looked after the birds all shutters and covers were up allowing all the fresh air to circulate within the transporters. We were in the lay by until approximately 9.30 before we headed off to the liberation site. In that time the transport team made regular attempts to get the birds to drink by swishing the water around and replenishing it. Some birds drank others didnt, you can lead a horse to water but cant make them drink. I took temperature reading out side the transporter and inside the baskets. The difference being 3 degrees higher in the baskets, the outside temperature was 21 degrees, basket temperature 24 degrees, well within safe tolerances that can cause dehydration. As i said the birds looked really well. At around 9am the decision was made to cut all the seals and move to the liberation site ready for the liberation. All water was finally removed and the transporters were secured up before we left for the site. Unfortunately the car park that we use for liberation was extremely full and we had to take a slight detour to an alternative site that chris knew of. In fact the site we liberated from was better that the original site. We arrived around 9.40 ish and the birds were allowed to settle before liberation. The team did a great job in preparing the birds prior to liberation. All baskets were given there final check and chris briefed the team on the liberation. The birds were liberated and all left the site fairly quickly.

Theres been lots of false accusations and rumours going around about the way the birds are being looked after during transportation to the liberation site. I would like to set the record straight and i can guarantee everyone that the team did an exceptional job in looking after the birds. I was really impressed by the way chris managed his team and looked after the birds. Yes there has been issues with poor racing this year, we all agree with that but the reasons are not with how the birds are looked after.

I would like to again thank chris for his hospitality and i would recommend to any fancier who hasnt seen a liberation in the flesh to attend one, it was really an eye opener.

Below is a video i shot of the liberation. I hope you all enjoy it as much as i did making it.

Good video, and nice to see a good report on the convoyers! Looking at the video though, surely the design of the transporter is dodgy with the birds in the smaller transporter being liberated a full 30 seconds behind the ones at the top of the main transporter with the automatic shutters? Races can be decided by a few seconds so surely all should be let go at the same time? I know which transporter I would want my birds on! ;)

agree with you rasbull i'm not in favour of these slow release mechanisms the birds working towards the top must be going off their nuts hearing all thats going on round about them

it was plain to see the advantages of the older type of release from the lorry without the roller shutter door. how this design was passed for use is crazy in my eyes.

The transporter on the left did not impress me at all, with all birds liberated at once. Surely it would be better to split the sides into two, liberating say the bottom two rows, followed by the top 4 rows. I know which transporter I would want my birds on as well !!!

you would think there is an advantage but there isnt, all the birds circled the liberation site at the same time and they all left at the same time except for some stragglers which didnt come out of the basket, when there 4000 plus bird in the air they stay as a bunch, and they leave as a bunch. the good thing about the automatic transporter is the birds on the bottom rows dont get knocked to the floor and injured like in the transporters when they all exit together.

hi jas i apreciate that the birds at this lib may have been looked after, but its only one race and you were present to give your view on how they were looked after.

just like any school with inspectors calling there will be improvements .

i know chris and i get on with him great... i dont think he would intentionally not look after the birds.

but one swallow doesnt a summer make.

trouble is ..6 clubs have already left the fed and there will be more if rumours are to be believed.

i hope it doesnt come to it but can the fed aford to have several clubs leaving it?

lots of members are not happy and they already are showing their feelings by leaving.

some are big clubs and i hope everything can be sorted b4 next season one way or another.

hi paul

regarding clubs leaving the fed one or two of them were trying last year to switch the fed south last year but they coulnt gather five clubs to call a special meeting ,so its no surprise they went when they didnt get there own way

they think the grass is greener on alternative routes and birds arnt lost on other routes etc but week in week out they are suffering even more due to lower numbers so wish them all the best and hope they enjoy there racing

cant agree more

been to liberations back in the 80`s when the wnr fed liberated some 24to ,26,000 pigeons from craven arms and ludlow

yes a great sight to see them pouring out as one then your chasing the injured ones around the car park with broken wings from them being hit to the ground

a much safer liberation yes 30 seconds difference between top and bottom row but has video shows and states all birds circle for a while as a batch so no advantage gained and no birds lying on the ground either

realy good liberation video, just enough time to nip over to lib site and video rhondda valley fed looking at 9.30 lib also at swindon.

I agree Tom. I have liberated the Europa classic for the last 6 years and every year without exception they have circled the site for a couple of minutes before clearing towards home in 1 or on 2 occassions 2 batches. Some people are never happy and always want to complain about something.

HI tom.

Yeah thats no problem mate.

Paul i hear what you are saying about how things are done when theres people present. Im a good judge of people i manage people in my day job and i can generally tell someone who is doing it just for the person whos present. I had birds in on saturday and lost 6 and they were all split up. All i can do is call it like i see it im afraid.

Glad you all liked the video.
