How do I break my pigeons bad habbits? (I know its my fault)

They have a constant supply of food and are allowed in and out the loft when they want, and i sometimes feed them on the grass!

How do i change this so i have more control over them i.e they trap when i tell them to etc.

all help is much appreciated.

If you are hopper feeding an open loft, I think you will benefit in the long run. :)

Try a tit-bit to get them in when you want. Members on the forum swear by peanuts, a mixed seed mixture will get them in but it may also bring their moult on too quickly. Make sure its in a distinctive cup or can that they'll recognise when they see it. I know some of mine will drop onto me, or follow me, if I step outside with a hormoform bag, which I give them after their main feed.

I think you need to start by giving them a set amount at a set time, if they've got a constant supply of food they're not hungry so will just ignore you when you call them in. Keep them in for a day without exercise and just give then an ounce of food each to start off with to make them a bit keener, then you can increase it to an ounce and a quarter when you've got them under control. If I let mine out twice they get half an ounce after their morning exercise then three quarters at night, they don't mess about and come in when called. One of our members only gives his young birds an ounce all the time.

So, i've kept them in today and gave them an ounce of corn each. Do i let them back out tomorrow?

no you would be better to give them nothing tomorrow - then let them out the day after and feed light once you call tehm in , once you get some sort of control over them adjust the feed to suit .

good luck - keeping them on the hungry side will do them more good than harm

sort out your bad habbits by giving them as much as they want, you wont win nothing with roofers, you will get this sorted in 3 days, 1st day i would keep them in with no feed, 2nd day i would let them out, they might not fly much but as soon as they land, call them in, the ones who trap in instantly will get fed a full ounce those who dont, will again recieve no feed, untill the following evening when they will trap like no tommorow! But always associate the bird entering the loft with a reward. They will then associate with quick and effective trapping, this method i myself will prefere applying it when the young birds are being trained.
