DJ Posted June 28, 2010 Report Posted June 28, 2010 hi ive got a 2 yr hen that has been limping for 5 days now but ive checked her leg and cant see any obvious signs of a break or any broken skin? its her left leg and she wont put any weight on it can anyone advise me what to do next? debbie
OLDYELLOW Posted June 28, 2010 Report Posted June 28, 2010 if ring leg check to ensure no grains are between ring and leg , it may have knocked it bruised it , or if feeding too much protein it may have gout feed more barley
sapper756 Posted June 29, 2010 Report Posted June 29, 2010 Personally I would tape it up to give it added support, and if there is a break, this will hold it in place and allow it to healhttp://forum.pigeonbasics.org/public/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif
Guest IB Posted June 29, 2010 Report Posted June 29, 2010 I don't think it is broken, birds do not put weight on a broken leg, they hold the foot off the ground for around 10 days until healed, then limp on it for around a week max. There is a school of thought that says when the bird does hold the foot off the ground, the broken ends are held together, properly aligned, and at the correct tension to allow healing. There is therefore no need to splint the leg. My guess is that you should have a good look at the underside of the birds foot for signs of infection - an angry red colour, swelling, cuts or thread caught round a toe. If the foot is dirty, wash in warm soapy water first, dry off without rubbing, then smear with any antiseptic healing cream you have to hand (germolene, sudacreme etc).

Guest strapper Posted June 29, 2010 Report Posted June 29, 2010 i would try looking at the toes, if one is strained or broken this will keep the bird off that foot.ive had a youngbird do the same this year.
Fair Play Posted June 29, 2010 Report Posted June 29, 2010 Have had two young birds with broken legs this year, one set perfectly but the other has set at an angle looks strange but seems to be manageing ok just kept turning the ring with the help of a cold cloth a little oil.
DJ Posted June 29, 2010 Author Report Posted June 29, 2010 thanks for the replies well ive checked the birds leg and foot again and its not swollen anywhere and i cant find anything like a cut or splinter? my birds are fed on versa laga best all round mix so i cant see it being gout my birds ring is on her good leg so its not the ring being too tight or grit or seed stuck inside it shes still limping today so fingers crossed i will see some improvement tommorow debbie
