Father and son caged after murdering man in pigeon loft feud

Jun 12 2010 Wilma Riley

A FATHER and son who killed a man after a feud sparked off by pigeon loft attacks were each jailed for 10 years yesterday.

Alex Gallagher, 29, admitted hacking, slashing and stabbing Gavin Wright to death in August 2004.

While he carried out the attack, his dad, also Alex, 51, screamed "finish him off".

Wright, 27, of Law Street, Barrowfield, Glasgow, bled to death at the scene in nearby Dalserf Street.

His face was slashed open and he had multiple skull fractures and 17 stab wounds.

The High Court in Glasgow heard Gallagher Jnr had gone out to confront Wright and two others who were hitting the family car with an axe.

One of Wright's pals blasted Gallagher Jnr twice with a sawn-off shotgun, hitting his arm and leg.

Gallagher Jnr, who had a knife, chased Wright. He and an unidentified man, launched the deadly attack.

The court heard the Gallaghers were convicted in 2005 of murdering Wright and ordered to serve at least 15 years. But, after that trial, further examination of CCTV film cast doubts on two witnesses and the Appeal Court quashed the convictions.

The Crown was given authority to raise fresh proceedings against the pair. The Gallaghers were due face another murder trial when the Crown accepted their pleas to the reduced charge of culpable homicide.

The first trial had heard the killing came after a series of incidents involving feuding families which started with tit-for-tat attacks on pigeon lofts.

Thought that was the whole point of the sport, to entice anothers bird into your loft, thief pouters. Sign of the times I think. These punters are not yer normal doo men but probably gangsters. I'd say a wee bit extreme for the loss of a pigeon

Your correct mate its is mostly gangsters and most of the doocots have false floors in them with stash in them that's why the huts are built like fort knox. As for the doos people don't really fly them the way they used to nobody wants to risk losing there's but wants to catch everyone else but you can if you don't put yours out so that's why I stopped absolutley no point in having the doos. Now I'm into racers my lofts nearly complete so hopefully have some fun with them as for the guys on here the homing doomen seem a lot more helpful than the pouters guys any day

A mate of mine used to fly the horseman doos in Edinburgh. Think he had around a dozen but had to box them up every night and keep them in the house as his loft was always getting broken into. I used to like going down there when he was flying but he used to mutter all sorts of things that I could not make out or understand but having seen a little of what it was all about I found it very interesting. Did they not used to fly them from the tenements? I could see this as being great entertainment after a hard days graft on a nice evening and I'll bet it was all done with respect and good fun but you always get the odd R sole who has to be thee "winner" no matter what and I think there are more of them these days who need the ego massaged to exsist. Hope you do well at the racing but more importantly enjoy all aspects of the sport, good and bad. :)

I was told this a couple of weeks back while sitting with my birds waiting on a train at Polmont station. There was a station cleaning squad working there that came from the Glasgow area, they asked me what type of pigeons I had. Then they got onto what was happening through there with pouter lofts being burned down. Thought they were joking and said so at time; but they were adamant it was true. Seems now it wasn't a joke after all. Still hard to believe tho.
