We have a tired and disorientated racing pigeon apparantly from Holland (we are in North Essex) Having spent a long time online trying to get a contact number I have sent several emails but discovered that a lot of information is out of date with wrong numbers etc. I have followed the advice and the pigeon is in a pet carrier with water and some rice (we have no bird seed)

What do we do next?? Holland is a long way off and we would be reluctant to let the pigeon go off again.

Any comments please?

Nicky

If you have any peanuts then you may find the bird will eat them.

They have more goodness than rice and will help it recover more quickly.

Once again if you let us have the ring number we can help.

As far as I can see the contact details to report the pigeon are as follows

Mail to: bureau@upo.nlwww.duiven.net

Telephone 0031 3185 59700

Obviously when you report the pigeon it may take some time thereafter to repatriate it and the main concern at the moment is to ensure it eats and drinks to recover it's strength.

it would be better to pass it onto a local fancier in your area,as it could take some time to sort out.

I was thinking that too. Have emailed the Dutch address but how do I find local fanciers? Not in phone book and could not find anything for this area - Halstead, Essex

Thank you. Just wondering how often and how much should I feed him, he seems quite hungry but I dont want to overfeed.

Feed it 2 heaped tablespoons or you could use an eggcup as a measure and give it 2 of those. This should work out you'll be giving it 1.5oz of feed which should be sufficient.

After everyone was so helpful I thought you may like to know the outcome. The Dutch pigeon was indeed from Holland and I had a phone call from his owner last night. He told me something about the pigeon that he is a long distance racer and flew from Paris 2 weeks ago. He has also flown from the South of France and Barcelona. There were 60 birds released with him from Paris and the other 59 made it back. I think maybe a hawk or similar may have tried to attack him on the journey as the feathers at the back of his head are still ruffled a bit although he now seems fit and well. His owner doesnt want him back and is sending the pedigree and a bit of info to me so I will probably let a local fancier have him which I guess is the best course of action now??

well done for taking care off it.yes if you give it to someone near you they can keep it as stock bird and hopefully bred some winning babys from it. :)
