Guest Posted December 28, 2005 Report Posted December 28, 2005 Travel Troubles After Heavy Snow Snow and freezing temperatures have greeted people as they try to get back to work after the Christmas break.Roads were closed and trains were cancelled in the cold weather, with Kent and the east of Britain suffering the most disruption. Motoring organisations warned of treacherous road surfaces, while weather forecasters predicted an even colder day on Thursday. The heaviest snowfalls were in Lincolnshire, but the snow extended from north east Scotland all the way down to the south ADVERTISEMENT of England. Forecasters said temperatures could fall to -10C overnight, though rain and higher temperatures are expected by the weekend. The RAC said lanes on sections of the M20 in Kent were closed because of the snow and there was also disruption on the A20 between Dover and Folkestone. Canterbury was hit by severe black ice, while part of the A3 at Milford in Surrey was closed, as was a section of the A14 in Cambridgeshire. South Eastern Trains urged passengers from coastal areas in Kent and East Sussex not to travel. No train services were running from Hastings to Tonbridge, Dover to Folkestone, Ashford to Swanley, Tonbridge to Redhill and from Strood to Maidstone West. There were long delays for passengers on Arriva Trains Wales and Central Trains after a road vehicle collided with a railway bridge in the Oakengates area between Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury. There were also delays in London, while planned engineering work on other lines reduced other services. Eurotunnel's Channel Tunnel services, which had to be suspended for a period on Tuesday night, were running normally.
Guest Posted December 28, 2005 Report Posted December 28, 2005 UK shivers as more snow predicted Britain was braced for more icy blasts with even colder conditions - and heavy snow - likely on Thursday. Kent, eastern England and eastern Scotland took the brunt of the freezing weather which led to severe disruption on the roads and railways. Overnight temperatures were expected to plunge as low as minus 10C (14F) in some places, with most of eastern England unlikely to see the thermometer rise above freezing on Thursday. Supermarket giant Tesco ordered more winter-warmer foods after customers ADVERTISEMENT snapped up fare such as soups, curries and hot chocolate. To add to motorists' problems, some petrol stations ran out of fuel following the Buncefield oil depot fire at Hemel Hempstead and the huge Christmas demand. But oil companies said there were good supplies and there was no need for panic buying. Some areas of Kent were reported to have received as much as 12 inches of snow. Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, Norfolk, Leicestershire and Northamptonshire were among other areas where snow showers persisted. South Eastern and Thameslink train services were among those hit by the wintry conditions, while some major routes in Kent suffered closure or lane closure. Hastings, Ramsgate, Dover and Ashford were among Kent towns affected by rail disruption. No bus replacement services ran as road conditions were too poor. The RAC reported light traffic, with many people still on holiday and those thinking of going back to work deciding against it because of the bad weather. The RAC and police warned people in the worst-hit areas to avoid unnecessary journeys. "Almost all areas could get snow late on Thursday and into Friday morning and there could be some particularly heavy falls in Scotland," said PA WeatherCentre spokesman Philip Brown. He went on: "People in eastern England and in eastern Scotland will probably not see temperatures get above freezing tomorrow but it will be dry and bright. "However, a front is expected to move in from the west and this will lead to sleet and snow. A lot of people could wake up to snow on Friday morning, but then a second front will move in, bringing rain and warmer weather. By Saturday, the temperature could be 9C (48F) which is above average for this time of year." Having been spared paying out for a white Christmas, bookmaker William Hill opened bets on a white New Year's Day, with Aberdeen evens, London 6/4 and Cardiff 2/1. The weather also hit sporting fixtures. A number of football matches were postponed including the Premiership clash between Bolton and Middlesbrough. Race meetings at Newbury and Catterick were abandoned.
westburylofts Posted December 28, 2005 Author Report Posted December 28, 2005 Terry Thanks for the extra snow mate, but i think it is a bit of a cheek to bill me for it, LOL HOPE YOU ARE ALL SAFE AND WELL RAY
Guest Posted December 28, 2005 Report Posted December 28, 2005 All the transport chaos reminded me of one snowy night many many moons past where me in laws was supposed to be collecting me in the van at the local station after finishing work in Glasgow at 10pm. Got to station 11pm, no van no inlaws, only snow as far as eye could see... except the River Clyde, snow just doesnt seem to settle well there. ;D Just about a mile from home, so set off walking the only path - a tyre track in road - and after 20 minutes came to the County Inn, the only pub between station & home - surprise, surprise, van parked there. Popped in, and sure enough, every soul in Helensburgh was in there that night. Spotted right away (only snowman in the pub) and the mob told me they'd fought their way through the snow all the way down from the house to the pub, and had to give up there. Few bevvies, people piled into the back of the van, driver got it turned, pointed back up the hill, then off we went, jumping up and down on the wheel sills to get purchase on the road, van sliding all over the place. 30 years ago, feels like yesterday.
mealybar Posted December 29, 2005 Report Posted December 29, 2005 Went up to the Metro Centre today to check out the sales, in hindsight it might have been a wise idea to stick by the fire the 25min journey took well over an hour to get there (much snow!), and on the hour to get back (traffic drving at 3 miles an hour >). Had a doo to go out to tonight, and still the roads hadnt been touched by the gritters, thats 8 hours later (post snow ), bet they were on tea break :X Paired the yearlings last week, have taken this time to realise that their together again..lol not pigeon weather
