T_T Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 Does anyone else have trouble with these in the summer.? Any Cure ?
THE FIFER Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 yes i use the hosehold items u get for hanging up, also when the birds are out i use a fly spray in all the nooks and gaps,
Tony C Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 T_T I remember some years ago Bernie Bennett wrote an article on this. The gist of it was that you mix up some concoction in a bucket and leave it near the loft. I'll try and get hold of him and see if he's still got the info on it. Also apparently there's an old hard to get book knocking around about flies, its by a J.R Hartley :) :)
Guest Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 ARCHIE IS YOUR ICE HOCKEY TEAM NOT CALLED THE FIFE FLYERS LOL
perk Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 used to use vaponers, but can,t get them now, never got flies, mites,of lice
AlanWilkins Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 dont laugh but if you hang a plastic (clear) bag filled with water you wont see any flys. Ther see a larger reflection and wont go near it
Guest jason Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 flies are alright, until you get your tackle caught in one lol. we use fly papers in the corn store and they attract the flies.
PIGEON_MAN Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 REAL OLD CURE WAS TO HANG A ONION IN THE LOFT,BUT MUST ADMIT THE BEST THING I EVER USED WAS THE VAPONA STRIPS WHICH I BELIEVE ARE VERY DIFFICULT TO GET HOLD OF NOW.
Guest Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 used to use vaponers, but can,t get them now, never got flies, mites,of lice More modern version available supermarkets: a single white plastic thingy with a hook for hanging up, maybe designed for the patio, at around £2 each, and a double standalone plastic one with a lifty-lid to reveal as much or as little, for inside the house, just over £3. Based on Citronella, a plant essential oil. Disnae kill the flies - they just don't like the smell, so buzz-off elsewhere. Had around 8 singles, hung them up in each section. Reckon needs more than that to be really effective, and wondered if they would be better hung along the loft perimeter, like a shield or 'smelly force-field' rather than used inside the actual loft . Nice smell though - same smell as Pronafit smoke bomb and Harkers feather drops.
Tony C Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 we use fly papers in the corn store and they attract the flies. I didn't think flies could read :o :)
Guest beautyhomer Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 Vapona's have been banned for a couple of years now, used to use them in the milking parlour.Found the modern replacements to be not nearly as affective. We get the citronella oil in its concentrated form and then make a 10% solution in the teat spray. This keeps flies off between milkings.Could do the same around the loft, sure smells nice. The concentrate could be used as feather drops like the Harkers product.
Guest Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 Used to get bothered with midgies hovering under the eave near loft doors. Right along the same eave was also covered in spiders webs. Last year started leaving the garlic clove leftovers from the drinker on the drain cover outside the loft: midges and spiders have moved.
andy Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 T_T, ARE YOU SAYING THAT THE ONLY THING THAT HANGS AROUND YOU ARE THE FLIES?
T_T Posted February 18, 2006 Author Report Posted February 18, 2006 Andy, Maybe I smell like a piece of dead meat.!!!
jimmy white Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 :)any one tried ordinary fly spray, birds dont like it, but thats just for a minute, even sprayed under the nest pans,, at least theres no beasties there :)

Guest Silverwings Posted February 21, 2006 Report Posted February 21, 2006 T-T , last summer tried a mixture of jeyes fluid and duramitex diluted it and sprayed it along the vents and under the nest bowls during breeding , smells like DEATH but it moves the flies, also tried it on our Tomcats gonads dont think he liked it either ? but it stopped the fleas biting his tackle .......ray
