Peckedhen Posted March 12, 2006 Report Posted March 12, 2006 What is the maximum amount of time to wait for eggs to hatch? The second egg was laid 21 days ago, they are full but still no sign of chipping! ?? :-/ :-/

Peckedhen Posted March 12, 2006 Author Report Posted March 12, 2006 I'm 95% sure they are full Westy - a fancier friend checked them just after me and confirmed - I'm loath to crack them.....just in case!!
westy Posted March 12, 2006 Report Posted March 12, 2006 i have heard of the chicks gettin stuck in the egg and not able to get out not sure what they did they should abanden them soon my tumblers are starting to not sure what to do mabey other members will help you.
Guest shadow Posted March 12, 2006 Report Posted March 12, 2006 The young one could be dead in the shell if the eggs have got chilled sometime during the incubation period, leave them another couple of days in case you miscounted then put them to your ear and see if youcan hear the young one trying to chip out if nothing then your better off getting rid of them and letting the parents go back down on eggs again if you want any more youngsters "Shadowood Lofts"
Blue Chequer Posted March 12, 2006 Report Posted March 12, 2006 Just leave them and wait and see, they should have been off by now but I find that my Pomeranians eggs seem to take longer than the racers. They could be dead in the shell, I had this happen quite a lot, many years ago and it was put down to using some bad straw for nesting. Patience is a virtue. Good luck. Blue Cheq.
THE FIFER Posted March 12, 2006 Report Posted March 12, 2006 I WOULD LEAVE THEM JUST IN CASE BUT U SHOULD BE ABLE TO TEL BY LISTENING OR BY THE FEEL IN UR HAND IF BIRD IS DEAD IN SHELL THE EGG WILL SEEM TO ROLL ABOUT IN UIR HAND IF OK WILL LIE FIRM, THIS IS SOMETHING WHICH COMES WITH EXPERIENCE, BUT BREEDING EARLY GIVES U THESE PROBLEMS EGGS GETTING CHILLED WITH ALL THIS COLD WEATHER, AS I WRITE THIS WE HAVE ABOUT 6-7INS OF SNOW AND STILL FALLING, NOT NATURAL FOR BIRDS BREEDING IS IT, THEY ARE MADE TO BREED IN THE SPRING, 21 DAYS IS WORTH ANOTHER 2-3, IF NOT LIFT THEM, MAYBE U GOT UR DATES WRON IN LAYING, BUT U SHOULD BE ABLE TO TELL BY THE EGGS
T_T Posted March 12, 2006 Report Posted March 12, 2006 Strange Peckedhen, Just 10 days ago I was telling a friend that I had a pair of eggs that looked as though they wern't going to hatch. They were full, yet I couldn't feel any movement. I checked the eggs and noticed the very smallest hairline crack in the shell. No movement so I thought the youngsters would be resting. It took those youngsters THREE DAYS to hatch. I hope they show the same determination in the race basket. I think I would give your eggs two more days and if nothing showing, ditch them but as Fifer suggests, MAKE SURE that you got the date right. Good Luck.
Guest Posted March 12, 2006 Report Posted March 12, 2006 It has been really cold this winter, as Fifer has remarked woke up to 6" of snow this morning and its still snowing. Maybe eggs have been chilled at some point adding a day or two to expected day of hatch? Must admit I find it very difficult to judge eggs; think they're OK and turn out duds; and vice versa. If the birds are still sitting, surely a good chance they'll hatch?
Peckedhen Posted March 12, 2006 Author Report Posted March 12, 2006 It took those youngsters THREE DAYS to hatch. I hope they show the same determination in the race basket. Hope they show a little more speed though! ;D ;D The parents are still sitting and peck and wing slap me more than usual if I try to look so, fingers crossed, they know more than me (now, that wouldn't be hard would it?! : Your advice is really appreciated all. :K)
NANCYVIEWLOFTS Posted March 12, 2006 Report Posted March 12, 2006 take a small jug of warm water place the 2 eggs in the water and wait a few seconds for the water to settle if the eggs have live young in them they will kick slightly if they dont then they are likely to be dead in shell the water will not harm them
jimmy white Posted March 12, 2006 Report Posted March 12, 2006 sounds to me their dead in the shell, BUT its very easy to get the dated wrong, if you put the egg up to your ear and listen very carefully you can hear the yb" tapping" its still possible for them to hatch, as they may have not been sitting properly the first day or two, anyway i hope your lucky and they hatch
celtic Posted March 12, 2006 Report Posted March 12, 2006 I had one , was well chipped on Friday teatime and it only hatched out early on this afternoon ( sunday), i was beginning to think the same as you peckedhen but there you go they surprised me, still one to hatch out i'll let you know how it gets on.

celtic Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 Second one just hatched out this afternoon.
Peckedhen Posted March 13, 2006 Author Report Posted March 13, 2006 Good job Celtic. I was mistaken thinking one was chipping yesterday - it was just some 'poo' stuck on the egg! I've had them in the water today - no movement - I'll give them another couple of days......
Chatrace Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 they should hatch 18 days at most fron the laying of the 2nd egg. After that your wasting time on the next round. After 5 days you could candle them and see if they are developing and at that point you could make up if they are alive or clear and start over.
jimmy white Posted March 14, 2006 Report Posted March 14, 2006 :) good luck celtic :) ,it looks dodgy now pecked hen, so sorry but who knows maybe lucky yet, hope so anyway :)
Mike Lycett Posted March 14, 2006 Report Posted March 14, 2006 If your dates are accurate I've never seen a pair of our eggs that have'nt hatched by the 19th day. Mike
