Guest marvin Posted April 18, 2006 Report Posted April 18, 2006 hi there guys and girls has anyone out there got a tried and tested cure for young bird sickness just started up again after a few years out i never used to get it but i suppose it had to happen todays birds just seem to be waiting to come down with one thing or another the only thing i remember working was lime but i cant remember the procedure ,any thoughts...thankyou
Guest Posted April 18, 2006 Report Posted April 18, 2006 When mine had it last year I used Harkers Adenosan on the corn, and fed them on a diet mix for a week. once I had given them the Adenson for a week I put them on probiotics and they picked up really well. There is a product called Xerek that the BHW scribe Bilco keeps mentioning that is a one of treatment that is supposed to stop it in its tracks.
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted April 18, 2006 Report Posted April 18, 2006 I SEEM TO BE PLAGUED BY YBS AND I SPENT AFORTUNE TRYING XEREK AND IN MY OPINION IT IS A LOT OF S---E AND NOT WORTH TRYING [ MY EXPERIENCE OF IT ONLY ]I NOW USE NIFRADEX AND THIS HAS WORKED GREAT FOR ME.
NANCYVIEWLOFTS Posted April 18, 2006 Report Posted April 18, 2006 i dont think there is a cure for ybs its a virus and cant be treated the products advertised are for help with ybs to stop secondry infection kicking in ei paratyphoid salmenella etc best natural product i have used is grapefruit seed extract from day one after weaning also if you use electrolites when they have ybs only use pure electrolites not the ones with added glucose as the virus feeds off the glucose perfectly all right to use electrolites with glucose on heathy birds
swilcox Posted April 18, 2006 Report Posted April 18, 2006 Lads From the day they are born give them Cider Apple Vinegar 2 x week, vaccinate when they are 30 days old and train when they are 60 days old. Add some good beans to the mix when they are growing and avoid sugarery mixes and too much seed! Depurative and Barley are also good things to add to a mix and dont over feed before racing and training!! By training when they are 60 days old you can avoid giving them so much training in the 3 weeks before the 1st yb race when so many are lost and pick it up!!! Young Bird sickness is not treatable but it is avoidable. Stuart Wilcox
peterpau Posted April 18, 2006 Report Posted April 18, 2006 Much inclined to agree with Stuart. only I go fo Cider vinegar 3 x a week and put Natural yoghurt on the corn + twice a week milton in the water
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted April 18, 2006 Report Posted April 18, 2006 i would have to disagree i think because when i have had ybs i have treated it with nifradex and the difference has been remarkable.
MsPigeon Posted April 18, 2006 Report Posted April 18, 2006 I don't know exactly what YB sickness is as it seems to take so many different forms. This may be due to the secondary infections as was mentioned by Nancy View Lofts. I know that YB's have a lot of stress when being weaned, molting, training, etc, etc. I think the best thing you can do is to keep the stresses to a minimum. Make sure they don't have any parasites in or out, give good food and clean water with what ever your program calls for in it. But I have heard that people put bleach in the water to keep viruses from spreading via the water. If you are unfortunate to notice YB's not feeling well then slow down on training or loft flying, just let them rest and get through it. Sure don't want them sitting around out in the rain and cold during this time. Plenty of time for training when they are done molting and feeling GOOD!

frank-123 Posted April 18, 2006 Report Posted April 18, 2006 try grape fruit seed extract read brunos post on health
Guest Silverwings Posted April 18, 2006 Report Posted April 18, 2006 treated it with Nystatin about 10 years ago, cleared it up in 4 days never had a problem since 1ml down the throat 5ml in the drinker for 3 days ,Vet at the time said it was ulcers in the crop causing them to bring back the food ? nystatin is used to treat thrush it stopped the irritation and allowed them to keep the corn down and recover ....ray
Guest Posted April 18, 2006 Report Posted April 18, 2006 I think Carol has a point: YBS means different things to different people. And agree its brought on by stress. Bird's immune system is lowered and then attacked by a combination of viral, yeast and bacterial agents. Interesting comprehensive article "Young Bird Disease Syndrome" page 54 of BHW April 14th issue by a South African (vet?) Dr R. C. Conradie. Seems the 'syndrome' has evolved to affect OBs too.
jimmy white Posted April 18, 2006 Report Posted April 18, 2006 i think if you go back on the forum youll find a lot of posts on yb sickness, my own opinion is most fanciers have two many ybs per cubic metre of air space, or even [if well ventilated [ a half cubic metre of air space,,, any more than that means, STRESS,,, THE MAIN CAUSE OF YB SICKNESS and i say this through bitter experience. i find it odd that most fanciers want a cure,,but dont seem to worry about the cause
THE FIFER Posted April 18, 2006 Report Posted April 18, 2006 give household vinegar in the water and old hand sour crop tablets 2 per day till it clears, i know yb sicknes is not sourcrop but those tablets have charcoal, and is good for birds with wet droppings or sickness, i am not too kean on cider apple vinegar for wet droppings etc as cider makes u go to the loo, try drinking it.

95smcdonald Posted April 19, 2006 Report Posted April 19, 2006 SOME GOOD TIPS HERE AS I HAVE NEVER HAD YOUNG BIRD SICKNESS.
Mike Lycett Posted April 19, 2006 Report Posted April 19, 2006 Best treatment is not to get it in first place Don't overcrowd, never underfeed, never abuse antibiotics & only breed from pigeons that are proven. Too much crap is bred from & put in the baskets. Sometimes you can go 4-5 generations without finding a pigeon that put up any kind of performance. What use is that? The old adages work best : "The best apples always nearest the tree" etc....

Guest Posted April 19, 2006 Report Posted April 19, 2006 Try not to buy birds from auctions, you never know what youre bringing into your lofts, if the auction is for a good cause, give a donation instead.
