Acccording to the RPRA website the meeting lasted two and a half hours and there was some very frank discussion. But DEFRA say they will need to go away and think about the points our representatives raised and that means it is going to be mid-June at the earliest before a decision is made. Peter Bryant rates the chances as 50-50.

Some p[eople believe that the birds naviagte by the position of the sun, if they are used to flying North to south, then they are switched in the opposite direction with the Sun at a different angle, this coould possible explain losses,

I will repeat I only think POSSIBLY.

DEFRA MEETING WITH RACING PIGEON UNIONS 23RD MAY

Representatives of the NWHU, NEHU, WHPU and the RPRA attended a meeting with DEFRA at Page Street, London today.  In a two and a half hour meeting, that was very frank at times, we presented our case to permit continental racing.  DEFRA opened the meeting by stating their concerns about the ‘uncertainties’ of the threat of AI by returning racing pigeons from the continent.  We replied with the reason and rationale of why we felt it was time to allow us to resume racing from overseas.

We were told that the policy team would need to go away and consider what we had said which included the financial implications for pigeon racing should it not go ahead, and the ultimate sacrifice that some fanciers faced for their pigeons.  We were advised that any such decision was likely to take about 2 weeks as the DEFRA team we met would have to make recommendations to a senior policy team who in turn would have to make a recommendation to the Secretary of State.

I can only say that at this juncture that there remains a 50/50 chance of continental racing and that is unlikely to start before, probably, mid June.  Watch this space for further updates and news.  If you want to be kept in the loop with any further news briefings and AI updates then please send your e mail address to gm@rpra.org

heard today that if defra allow us back into france w'ell only be allowed to go 350 miles into france, because french maff want the birds to leave france on day of toss, they don't want them stopping over night on french coast.. so tarbes etc don't look good !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ps also heard that CSCFC have cancelled this weeks race from Hexham due to lack od support !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sems like dries has her finger on the pulse, she also knew solent fed racing yelverton this week, how does she know all this, also just receivd the 10 y/b she promised me all of fed winners , she gave me them for nothing as well as a t3 clock. good genuine fancier.

Times ran out, forget racing over the pond,we can still fly Thurso,500miles in the West of England south Road combine, slight hicup last week, because some thought france was on the cards but Race sec, gave adjusted programme as:---

            this saturdaycoming-----bask friday,wetherby

                          3rd june-------hexham

                          10 june-------- melton mowbray

                          17june--------- berwick

                          24june---------melton mowbray

                           1st july--------couper angus

                           7july----------melton mowbray

                           14july---------Thurso

thurso glory days back on the cards, unless of coarse,we get red light from france 3 weeks time,by then a bit to late. The way i look at it,at least we got a decent racecoming up,and for all we know,we could be getting hit by this bird flu for years.

REGARDING THE DISTANCE FLYING FROM FRANCE ,PART OF FRANCE IS OFF LIMITS TO EVERYBODY ,AND THE POST ABOUT  DRIES HAVING HER FINGER ON THE PULSE I REMEMBER BACK IN APRIL SHE SAID SHE HAD IT ON GREAT INFORMATION THAT WE WOULD BE RACING FROM FRANCE AND I SAID THEN WE WOULD'NT,AND ANYBODY CAN FIND OUT WHERE ANY FED IS RACING FROM IT'S PLANNED BEFOREHAND YOU DONT JUST WAKE UP AND DECIDE WHERE YOU ARE RACING FROM A DAY OR TWO IN FRONT.

YES ARCHIE THE SCOTTISH EXECTIVE WILL TELL THE SHU, I'M GETTING AN E-MAIL WHEN HE OR SHE DOES SO WILL LET YOU ALL KNOW  :)

You do if you are the Solent Fed Tammy, Yelverton was decided on at a special meeting on Monday. I think they just got fed up with the Isle of Wight topping the fed :D :D :D :D

I'm afraid I don't know Rose as I didn't send! I do know that the birdage has been nowhere near the normal for the South Road, but is that going to be changed by a few training chucks down the West Country?

Personally I would have preferred to stay on the North and got some decent distance races!

Where do the Solent Fed go from here? These knee-jerk reactions by a very small committee are no good to anyone.  My members were looking for the Fed to re-organise the North road programme because of the limited mileage so far, not abandon it altogether. It looks as if we are now looking at 200mls max. I hope members have got plenty of room for the young birds after the season ends.

Good question Rose!! By the time these clowns make up their mind we will nearly be in youngbird season so we might aswell face facts it does not look likely now.

Thats what worries me most of all, how do you select what you are keeping for next year as the yearlings have had bugger all to test them.

Well said Mick, do we bother sending to Yelverton this week or will we be going back north next week when the chance of channel racing has receded again?

Cheers

So the SHU are going to be notified by the Scottish Executive....... god help us all.

I am disappointed there was no SHU representation at the meeting , channel racing is Scotland's bread and butter , London or not there should have been someone there....... impressed not !!!!!
