Its great news that we can channel fly again but i think people should spare a thought for the pigeons and what may well happen in the next 3 weeks.

 

Ive been flying the channel, 10 times a year for the last 25 years (since i was 8) and my experience has tought me that regardless of the racepoint or distance whether it be Piccauville or Pau a pigeon has to be prepared in the correct way to fly the channel. It concerns me that if flyers on Mass send thousands of pigeon across the water next week who have only been down the leg or been flying North it will be a disaster and if it is and returns are very poor dont be suprised if DEFRA kick off again.

 

Many people have been flying different systems because of the short race points which may well result in pigeons being kept short, also what sort of hours on the wing have they had? Add to this the large jumps in mileage they will recieve over the next 3 weeks! I know pigeons can be jumped but remember every pigeon on the transporter will be in the same boat.

 

The channel and our pigeons need to be respected so i hope thats remembered before pigeons are jumped hundreds of miles onto a different line.

I agree to a certain extent Stuart, the South Road can be just as unforgiving as the North Road when the conditions are wrong. I don't think line of flight is a big problem, and if your pigeons have flown reasonable distances on the North they should be ready for anything.  Here on the South Coast flying with the Solent we normally start with an Exeter 110 mls west then spin them straight across the Channel.  Many of the flyers around here refuse to fly along the Coast and choose to put their birds straight across the Channel. We have no problem with line of flight because we can't train that way unless you count a short spin from the Isle of Wight. With Young Birds we have flown the East Route ,Eastbourne & Hastings and then flown from Guernsey, so as you can see we continually fly dogleg routes but they still come home.

For months now many had accepted the fact that channel racing racing was dead and buried for 2006 myself included.

Now it is back on there is an immense sense of panic and rush to get the birds primed up for France.

Preparation for our channel racing takes weeks not days , if l feel they aint ready they will not be going, simple as that.
