Peckedhen Posted June 14, 2006 Report Posted June 14, 2006 Hi Paul and welcome to the forum. I have no experience of pigeons as I just started last year but, I can tell you what I have found.......think carefully how many birds you will keep..I started with a 4x6' shed, progressed to a garden shed and now have just bought a 12'x6' shed and would still like more room. I have found it much cheaper to buy a good quality garden shed and convert it to a loft. Having said that, you might be lucky enough to find a secondhand loft - I think that there are some on the forum at the moment. Be careful where you get your birds from...there are a lot of feather merchants out there...I learned the hard way....the most expensive is not necessarily the best. This forum is great for advice but, you can't beat hands on advice from a local fancier......when I think my birds are ill my 'pigeon man' comes straight round and checks them for me. Read and ask - the only stupid question is the one you don't ask - believe me, I know, I've asked plenty. ;D Good luck Sue
paul l Posted June 14, 2006 Author Report Posted June 14, 2006 thanks sue thats brill advise and will keep it all in mind

Peckedhen Posted June 14, 2006 Report Posted June 14, 2006 Folks who sell no good birds to unsuspecting newbies. My first birds were just caught in a barn - they were fantail/homer crosses, wild, not rung, covered in lice and couldn't find their way home if I took them out of sight of the loft!!

Chris Little Posted June 14, 2006 Report Posted June 14, 2006 Welcome Paul Pigeon Racing is the greatest sport / hobby on the planet. I am sure you will enjoy the experience However , a word of warning it does come with at a price. Of all the sports / hobbies known to mankind ( and ladies ) pigeon racing is miles ahead in terms of jealousy, pettiness, backstabbing, bad sportsmanship and sheer pathetic attitudes amongst the cliques...... sad but it is a fact.

superstar Posted June 15, 2006 Report Posted June 15, 2006 well good luck to you matey, this really is a roler coaster ride of a sport with many ups, downs, twists and turns, every day is different and never boring. Dont worry about the wife, be like me! Mine hates pigeons and me but at least with a loft at the bottom of the garden theres always somewhere to go free from nagging and is dry on the locked out nights lol
Guest jason Posted June 15, 2006 Report Posted June 15, 2006 well said superstar, there's certainly more downs than ups and there's nowt like a night in the corn store when your full of ale and fall out with the wife. ;D ;D ;D
