Must have been something with the weather yesterday, as I gave mine their second training toss and had a bad one. I took them friday and got them all together within 5 mins of getting home, so I took them back to the same point yesterday, and didnt see a pigeon for 3 hours, then just got ones and twos for the rest of the day. Out of 21 I ended up with 11 home last night and 1 reported 20miles west of my loft. And got another 4 back this morning. The funny thing is their not flown out at all, like you would have expected if they had been trying to get home all day. The not taking old birds with them may be right, as I took two oldns with em and they did split up when released, and looked like they were baffled.

Thursday, Friday my YBs wouldn't go over the door, and others around here experienced the same. Guess they sensed weather coming?

Heat & thunder storms yesterday, Pete. I'm sure your young birds will work back. Mine were out when yesterdays storm broke but once they got used to the thunder rolling around them and realised it couldn't harm them, never really bothered, although I do have one AWOL.

Maybe a timely warning for the rest of us as this hot weather is forecast to continue. I for one won't be training in it.

Interesting posts:

(1) have been advised to send 'best' old birds with young birds to basically show them the ropes - kit up and make for home on an A to B line, rather than A to B via X, D&F.

And our Fed will be sending OBs to the first three YB races this year.

(2) Have also been advised don't have all your eggs in the one basket, train YBs in small batches.

On the subject of attacks: reckon a large batch WILL attract attention while a smaller one might not?

Me I'd give 'em a couple o' days loft flying till they get there confidence back. May-be a day or two may-be a week or more. Whenever they start to fly well again. Now I know others have very different ideas but.  A Sunday late in the day with the sun shinning, no east in the wind, back to the same point you lost 'em from. As long as this spot, is not a spot half the local fed use. Don't see why you shouldn't get more, and these birds could do you some good if treated with care. Just take time, Ours have only been in the basket to get 'em vaccinated. May-be start training next week. All the best.

Like I posted earlier, I had a bad chuck sunday, but have now managed to get 18 back out of 21 and have found the same as you, there not down at all. I just gave mine a really good feed yesterday morning and put electrolytes in the water, and they still went off ranging last night for half an hour. All their droppings were perfect this morning, so I think its the best chuck they will ever get, as at least they have all made there own way home. You will be getting YBs back all week probably  :).

would it make a differance taking a ob hen.

Westy - YBs have a tendency NOT to want to come back quickly - especially early doors.  The Old birds (either sex) don't mess around.   It's foolish to take any OB's with YB's training & its never to late to learn that lesson

Personally, I like to train early evening for the initial training stints and only move on to morning training when I feel the birds have got the right idea about coming home straight away. I always have the first flights after they have had their afternoon exercise feeding in with a light titbit feed and taking the birds about 6.30. I have found that should they get into trouble in the evening they have only about 2-3 hrs flying time and approaching darkness seems to focus their minds, plus if they are that far from home they still have plenty left in reserve for a fresh start in the morning.
