Jack Barkel Posted October 31, 2006 Report Posted October 31, 2006 Hello Ted, It is my brother Sid who has lost all his stock birds, many thousands of pounds in value. 140 all told, of which I had 36 earmarked for me in South Africa, some of which I selected personally at Loella World. My loss is nothing as great as that of my brother Sid and his sons, they are devastated at the moment, and I only hope they can be persuaded to stay in the sport. Regards To All Jack
swilcox Posted October 31, 2006 Report Posted October 31, 2006 Im very sad to hear this esp as two of my old stocks were in that loft, one of them an old favourite Red Cock bred by Jan Theelen, Sid and his family must be gutted. Stuart

Guest speckled Posted November 1, 2006 Report Posted November 1, 2006 what aload of self ?????????????? cany say as might get deleted. but its a shame agrre with ya all some self minded pigs in this world :-/
Guest Paulo Posted November 1, 2006 Report Posted November 1, 2006 not much good puting them in the army nowadays, all they have to do is go out and do some damage somewhere and the army chucks them out, Your right there mate thats why National Service wouldn't work you'd just end up filling Colchester with charv scum. Especially with the way the human rights lobby watch recruit training like hawks so you couldn't even take them round the back of the cookhouse and give them a beasting. Plus National Service isn't the answer to everything I wonder how many people who scream on for National Service to be brought back in actually have served themselves? It would put an imense strain on the army training everybody and conscripts don't make the best of soldiers sometimes. My dad is always banging on about it coming back in and heres a man who has never served in his life. I was only in the cadets as a kid and then the TA for a few years and I enjoyed my time there throughly but I can imagine there are a lot of perfectly decent law abiding people who if they had to do National Service they would hate every minute. Its up to the government to actually start stop treating crims with kid gloves and start handing out some harsh sentences. Take away all the comforts they get in jail like TV etc and start making sure that prison is seen as a derttant. For the crime here that has been committed i.e. innocent pigeons been killed, disstruction of property and the distress that this has caused the Barkel family than I think if caught the scum should get 5 years. Should also make them do hard labour roadworks etc to save the government money and ease the burden on us taxpayers who are subbing their charve lifestyles. A full sentance should be a full sentance as well none of this letting them out after a few years. Is there nothing we can do for the Barkel's like an auction to raise money for a new loft etc?
pigeonpete Posted November 1, 2006 Report Posted November 1, 2006 Really sad news that, and im afraid its getting more common in the u.k, people are going on about the national services, but i honestly think that would nt work, like archie and paulo said, i have never been in the services, as im sure alot of us on here haven t, but i was taught from an early age about respect for other peoples property, the elderly etc, so do does the majority of the blame not lie with the parents?? :-/ and the government? kids are allowed to get away with so much these days and they know it, so will continue to do what they want unless some discipline is fetched back. and im not that old!! well im 30 :'( an elderly chap had "trick or treaters " last night and he told them to go away and they smashed his car headlights :o why?? whats the point?? grrrrrrrr im mad now. >
Guest Paulo Posted November 1, 2006 Report Posted November 1, 2006 "so do does the majority of the blame not lie with the parents??.'' Couldn't agree more Pete I'm from the "These spawn of three generations of no respect.'' as Rory the Red puts it and I was brought up to respect people its all good parenting if I was a naughty boy I'd get a good smack and it teaches you right from you. "kids are allowed to get away with so much these days and they know it, so will continue to do what they want unless some discipline is fetched back.'' Thats exatly it the kids know these days if an adult gives them a good shoeing they have the law on their sides! Crazy world I'm not that old either born in 1981 and am 25
stevebelbin Posted November 1, 2006 Report Posted November 1, 2006 I think cctv needs introducing on the allotments these days. And the lofts need secure fencing around them etc. In most other sports security is more of an issue. In the allotments in Thornaby they almost invite trouble, by people being to lazy to close the security gate at the top of the allotments path. Im not saying Mr Barkels lofts wern't secure as Ive not visited them but we need to catch someone at it and have an example made of them, because the problem seems to be getting worse.

Our new site isn't that bad as is closer to houses but the old site wasn't very secure at all. With the mount of money becoming involved in pigeon racing with the prices pigeons are and the cost of ets systems, baskets, clocks etc surprised there isn't more break in's on allotments.
Roland Posted November 1, 2006 Report Posted November 1, 2006 Don't look if squeamish http://207.46.11.124/cgi-bin/getmsg/F0008%2eJPG?&msg=9B718E9C-8E1C-4189-90B5-B340267D8A62&start=0&len=1615989&mimepart=5&curmbox=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001&b=ce9f53f7c66e6e04a076ee3d51bf40e7&disk=10.1.106.221_d209&login=rosscoley&domain=hotmail%2ecom&_lang=EN&country=UK&SafeRedirect=%26hm___ts%3d1162377005%26hm___ha%3dfd1335cde0fa15bc20c78e7c5174e046
Roland Posted November 1, 2006 Report Posted November 1, 2006 Remember when the Permisculous sixty's started, the 'Right' to do as one pleases and have ne redress, then their children, Primrose and Gladiola etc, - besides getting into Parliment ... taught their kids, Doesn't may as long as you enjoy and have love' .. Now under the 'Human Rights' act one has the Right to do what they want.... whether later accountable to their action or not. So one has the right to Rape, Pillage and Burn.... and told off if court. Soon one will see folks being charge for preventing this crimes... For though realistic folks believe them to be wrong, they have the right to do the deed, and to stop them wil - is - against their 'Human Rights'!
Guest Posted November 1, 2006 Report Posted November 1, 2006 Hi everybody, I'm Dave Barkel, (Sid the NFC secretary's brother). On behalf of my Dad Sid, and my brother Sid, I would like to thank you all for the sentiments shown. We received an overwhelming amount of phone calls yesterday including one from the USA. We have lost an irreplaceable family of stock pigeons in the fire, and that has devastated us all. The Red Jan Theelen cock that Stuart mentions in an earlier thread was indeed a favourite of ours too, but I'm sorry Stu, he's gone also! I reckon we've lost around £50,000 worth of birds. The monetary value is secondary to the birds, as they are irreplaceable. The loft can be re-built relatively quickly, but the birds....!! Whether we keep on flying now is in question. Both my brother Sid and myself have had enough, my father wants us both to keep going but at this moment in time our heads are in no state to make such decisions. I know that mine certainly isn't! The sight of the aftermath on Tuesday morning was horrific to say the least, and I'm sure that anyone that has suffered this type of attack will say the same. I could identify some of our favourites only by their rings. In the early hours of Tuesday morning I lay on the couch and mentally handled each and every stock bird that has gone, I could not sleep. I hope and pray it doesn't ever happen to another pigeon fancier as no-one should have to face what we did on Tuesday morn. With Best Regards, Dave Barkel. (Barkel Bros). :'(
Webmaster Posted November 1, 2006 Report Posted November 1, 2006 Firstly can I express my commiserations to the Barkel family in what must be a devastating time for them. We seem to be reading about arson attacks on pigeon lofts more and more often; this year has certainly been the worst that I've ever known. Last year we had the Pigeonbasics Auction at the end of January; 50% of the money going to British Fanciers Medical Research. May I throw the idea to our membership that in our auction this year that we setup a fund for these unfortunate fanciers who this devastating event happens to. I would be more than happy to run the fund; of course verifying that monies were spent on getting these fanciers established again in the sport. And if we have a surplus at the end of the year, that amount could go to the Medical Research, or other pigeon fancy related cause. Only an idea; let me know what you think Richard
Guest Posted November 1, 2006 Report Posted November 1, 2006 great idea richard do you want me to give salesman a call i think he would help again tammy has said he would help out as you know its alot of work.
stevebelbin Posted November 1, 2006 Report Posted November 1, 2006 Its a great idea, but money doesnt replace the years of breeding etc that has gone in to the likes of Mr Barkels loft.
Dougie Posted November 1, 2006 Report Posted November 1, 2006 Great Idea Clockman & Tammy 1 good on you both
Guest CS Posted November 8, 2006 Report Posted November 8, 2006 Here is a recent photo of the burn out in Ryhope, left to right David Barkel, and Sid junior secretary of the NFC. Not a pleasant site for anyone, but I feel a site which must be seen by all members. Permission accepted by Jack Barkel
rockinrick Posted November 8, 2006 Report Posted November 8, 2006 omg, richard m8 u have my respect , and any help i can give . a very bad and sad site , i am unashamed to say that the moment i saw the above pic i could do nothing but hold back tears to think that years of hard work are gone in a light of a match , so as i have said any help i can give please let me know . also please pass on my sincere best wishes to the barkel family .
Guest Posted November 8, 2006 Report Posted November 8, 2006 What deeply saddens me is that amongst that horrible mess lies the remains of one of the greatest pigeons every to fly in the UNC, The Tommy Cock, what terrible end for this great bird. I'm hoping that once Andy Galley's Children in Need auction has finished we can get our heads together and organise something to help the Barkel Brothers
