steven booth Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 HI THEREWHATS THE BEST THING TO WEAN YOUNG ON AND HOW LONG FOR? ALSO WHAT DO YOU USE BEFORE BREEDING AND CERTIAN PRODUCT
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 WHEN I SPLIT MY YOUNG BIRDS ALL THEY GET IS BEANS AND NOTHING ELSE TILL THE RACING IS OVER JUST A GENERAL BREEDING MIX COUPLE OF WEEKS BEFORE THEY PAIR UP AND USE THIS TILL THEY LAY AND JUST A GENERAL MIX TILL THEY HATCH AND THEN BACK ON BREEDING MIX TILL THE WEEK BEFORE THEY ARE SPLIT AND THEN ITS BEANS
Wiley Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 i always wean my youngsters around 22 days in racing section, stock shed they can be left anything upto 25 days sometimes i even leave them longer.Once weaned in every corner of my yb shed there will be some good thick layers of wheat straw. Then i just leave the top of thw drinker for a few days till im satisfied there drinking. For feeding theres a hopper in there most of the time but taken out before it goes dark, they are fed on 100% breeding mix.Once theyve all started feeding i change my feeding and add barley.once theyve started perching they start getting a rationed diet 1oz morning 1 oz evening as there still growing. Also the drinker will be removed at feeding times so they just dont have a few grains and clear of upto there perch.I also give a couple of hand fulls of grit. But this time when i start to get them tame once theyve started perching fighting with them in there boxes by grabbing there beaks ect. Before breeding i treat the birds by giving baytril usually about 10 days before first september for 5 days of that i mix it with a good multi vit and on the 11 day i jab them for the prevention of paratyphoid using sal-bac.When jabbed them it should be at least a month before you intend to pair them up.I always treat for canker as well before the breeding season .I always give multivits 2-3 days after any treament i do,aswell as that couple of days of garlic on the food
Tony C Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 The way I do it is the babies are fed the same feed as their parents minus the small grains/seeds once a day. Once they are filling their crops I start to feed twice a day, pellets in the morning breeding mix in the afternoon.

Parastop is what ive been advised to use as Baytril will give you all kinds of problems at some point!!
Wiley Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 every ones got there own opinions on baytril i think mate,i had been advised overwise by quiet a few fanciers.Y do u say its a bit extreme mate?
ribble Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 hi, wiley how do your birds respond to the vaccination?do you only jab them once? are your birds through the moult by september? thanks.

Wiley Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 sorry mate that musta been a typo error meant decemeber lol sorry, this is the way im goiong to attempt to do things this year they maybe wrong or right, just something i want to try and ill learn by my mistakes if its wrong!but if ppl have some advise i will take it into consideration.and id only treat them once the moult is completely through, that is just the date that im hoping to do this it doesnt neccesarrily mean it will be it could be later
stevebelbin Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 every ones got there own opinions on baytril i think mate,i had been advised overwise by quiet a few fanciers.Y do u say its a bit extreme mate? Its prescription only is the biggest factor, its that for a reason. It kills all the good bacteria aswell as the bad. Dont get me wrong its fantastic stuff if theres a major prob, ive used it on my birds when mine were really bad a few years ago. Parastop is supposed to be the best preventative and I know of a few top flyers who use it a month B4 pairing.
Wiley Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 thanks steve for ya advice mate 'It kills all the good bacteria aswell as the bad.' very important factor that i reckon will make me sway to buying parastop.thanks again
Roland Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 I wean 14/ 15/ no later than 16 days... placed and fed in Basket in their new loft ... breaking in, basket trained, and let out and placed back into basket. Yes they nip in on their own quite quickly. Will leave out on nice days overlooking the loft IN a wired Basket. Then let out of basket into an 'Open Door' where they can pear out and walk about, when the basket is took out of their loft. Soon have to place them through the traps a time or two, and a little treat the other side. They soon fly upto the traps and enter when hungry.

Guest Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 As usual I'm about 8 hours behind reading the postings, We are lucky to have individual breeding pens and the babies are put on the floor in the nest bowl at about 12 days old, there they can see their parents eating and drinking and before long maybe 2 or 3 days they are up at the food pot and the drinker copying their parents.I suppose this would be easy to do if you had nest boxes also, use the empty pick pot containers for the feed and water in the nest boxes. We don't change anything when the young birds are weaned between 21/23 days as they are already used to eating what their parents have. Once they are flying out I then start adapting their diet, feeding split into 1/3rd, one third pigeon pellets, one third barley and one third 14% protein mix. Following advice I read on here I added baby milk powder to the drinker every day for the first 30 days after weaning. this year and the babies developed extremely well. I'll be using it again next year.
schouwman71 Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 Maple peas i use when i first part them,if they dont eat these then they go,i dont want youngsters picking small grain.Les

I FIND IT INCREDIBLE THAT YOU TAKE YOUR YOUNG BIRDS AWAY AT THIS EARLY AGE, I WOULD NEVER DREAM OF REMOVING THEM FROM THEIR PARENTS AT THIS STAGE IN LIFE
Wiley Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 yea quiet suprised about the time u take them away mate!ive only ever done this if ive put all the hens over with them!
