Peckedhen Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 I've just been asked to release my birds at a funeral on Friday. Apparently the deceased was a fancier. They have been loft flying all winter, tending to stay in sight of the loft but, the funeral is about 30 miles from home. Will the birds remember their way back or do I need to take them for a training toss a bit nearer home? :-/ :-/
rockinrick Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 hi pecked hen , i personally would give the birds a couple tosses at around 15 mile from home jus to put them on right road , :)
Guest Paulo Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 should be ok we once had a racer come back after three years been sold in an entire clearance sale but it winged its way back to us after escaping from the guys stockloft
Wiley Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 have they been trained before, have the birds been ranging away from sight?
Guest jason Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 they should be ok but if your worried take them for a short training toss, just to put your mind at ease! jason
Peckedhen Posted January 3, 2007 Author Report Posted January 3, 2007 OK, thanks guys. Yes Wiley, they've flown four times from near this place but, not since September and someone has told me that they forget over winter - hence my panic!!
Wiley Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 lol they forgot over winter hmmm wouldnt agree with that to be honest. They should be fine
Guest slugmonkey Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 If you are flying them out I wouldnt worry I have started YB's out farther than that !!!
Guest REDFOXKRAUTHS Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 give them a toss every day till friday
peterpau Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 They always seem rusty first toss of the year. Taking some time with the initial first toss. Don't take a chance. Give 'em a couple or three chucks at ten mile in nice weather. If they're home before you no problem. Mine went 500ml one way and 300ml the other in the summer. I wouldn't take 'em 30ml any direction at this time of year, not without some preparation first.
Peckedhen Posted January 3, 2007 Author Report Posted January 3, 2007 Yeah, that's the trouble - there's only tomorrow to give them a practice, the forecast's good but I only just found out about it this afternoon and I know that I'll probably only be able to do one training toss cos I've already fed them too heavily this afternoon so they wont trap till they're hungry! :-/
Wiley Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 what tiem do you usually feed them pecked! I got told forecast is good throughout whole day tommorow??
Peckedhen Posted January 3, 2007 Author Report Posted January 3, 2007 I usually feed them midday so they trap then but, yesterday I paired up so the feed's been down all day today and I've let them out a pair at a time - you can bet they've all stuffed themselves!! :B
THE FIFER Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 they should be ok but if u have time a couple of tosses wont do them any harm.
carl Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 hey be carefull as the weathers not the best at the moment and they aint had a toss since september like you say,if the weather is rubbish you could lose birds.I wouldnt give my birds a toss in this weather and not from 30 mile. just my opinion
madmaxlofts Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 a couple ov short tosses should be ok just to get them going again when racing comes mine go 30 mile straight away if they dont come back after having a season last yr then there no good anyways
birdman55678 Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 They should be fine but if you are worried then take them 1/2 way and see what the returns are. Base your next if any training on that toss. Depending on when the wedding is suppose to be you should do well. Ed
Peckedhen Posted January 3, 2007 Author Report Posted January 3, 2007 Hey! Its a funeral and its the day after tomorrow - Friday!! Hence the panic! Thanks everyone - I'll take them half way tomorrow and keep my fingers crossed!! Sue :K) :K)
kev01293 Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 hi pecked hen, sorry to add to the confusion but i wouldnt dream of sending my birds 30mls in this weather without first giving them some warm up tosses starting at just 5 miles kev :-/
Roland Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 Do what you feel is best for your peace of mind. If they don't make it then you've lost nowt, and if reported later make it a belated Xmas Gift.
Guest REDFOXKRAUTHS Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 Yeah, that's the trouble - there's only tomorrow to give them a practice, the forecast's good but I only just found out about it this afternoon and I know that I'll probably only be able to do one training toss cos I've already fed them too heavily this afternoon so they wont trap till they're hungry! :-/ take them ten mile morning lunch time and after non

Peckedhen Posted January 4, 2007 Author Report Posted January 4, 2007 Thanks Tracey. The weather is awful today - I wouldn't release a dead cat in this, let alone my precious birds!! I'll just have to wait and see how it pans out but, if I don't get a practice toss then I'll just take the one bird.
