we allways here of scottish fanciers on about east ,,west   north ,,south etc , whos got the best chance , whose got the worst chance etc,,i may be mistaken but looking very roughly at a map ,, theres a point in sweden direct east of edinburgh, where pigeons would have to fly over approx 400 miles of water, could this be possible? the distance from aberdeen would be the same distance as eyemouth, glasgow would get direct overfly [being direct west of edin]from edin,  but pigeons dont like flying over water , probably a mad thought , but just wondered what scottish fanciers would think :) :) :)

ps anyone remember hearing of captain hopas and his north sea dordins  :)

Saw a proposal in BHW a few years back for a NFC race from Germany. Looked at the map and jaw dropped on chest ... vast expanse of North Sea to cross.

But agree with Jimmy, a race West into Scotland would mean difference in distances between competitors would be a lot less than now on South to North.

Other option of course is a race from each point of the compass ... level playing fields, shortest becoming longest flyers etc ... and pigeons that´ll home from anywhere.

WHAT ABOUT THE PIGEONS WHO FLY FROM THE FAREO ISLANDS HAVE THEY NOT TO CROSS ABOUT 200 ML OF WATER OR MORE ,THAT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA AND A REAL TESTER AT THAT DONT THINK ITS A MAD IDEA ,THINK KEEPING PIGEONS IS A MAD IDEA LOL.

Ágree Sammy. Last year there was a straw poll on SNFC racepoints due to the AI thing. All inland and all along the south coast of England from Maidstone to Penzance.

Stuck me oar in about Lerwick and the problem there was it was only 40 miles into Aberdeen, so Faroes would sort that out. Meant North section would be shortest flyers and South Section longest ... turns racing on its head.

Also thought about a boat in the North Sea and the Atlantic. Turns the East and West sections back to front.

And probably the best pigeons in the world if they can fly these.  :)

Yes, mad and proud of it.  ;D

Hey Brun... what's this  'Stuck me oar in about Lerwick and the problem there was it was only 40 miles into Aberdeen so Faroes would sort that out...

Did you really mean it's only 40 miles from Lerwick to Aberdeen??!! mmm check your atlas.. its upwards of 180 miles from Shetland to Aberdeen. (200 from Lerwick)

There is a ferry which goes from Lerwick to Faeroe islands during the summer months (Smyrrl line) so a race is entirely possible from Faeroe which would be well over 200 miles to the north-west tip of Scotland.

It is a very common thing for us,fanciers from Malta. All our races are from Italy, the shortes being Belveder about 90miles waters,we organize races up to  Manfredonia 660 klm, depents on the bird which road it takes, can take terrian road which means a lot of time,or take the water road shorter but a good percentage of sea.I beleave that you need to breed and to have the blu print in your birds, once you have a family of birds that are used to the waters,no problem what distance they just do it.

Been Faroes. East route has been flown, and some do still I believe. I personally loved it when through F & M we were force to go that way. Just see all the different names at the top. Didn't we see eek in week out, the name they took it a their right to be there, letter every week in the 'Rags'.

I tell you, the letter with still wet from the tears they cried, and some were so called 'Names' lol.

Like the Most westernly piont of Ireland has a great leveller of distance, just depends - as usual - which way the wind blew on the day .... they don't like that one either lol.

Won't get past of course ... well has been last season, but we never flew it like

Wasn´t armed with these facts at that meeting.  :)   Bowed to the superior knowledge of John Duthie who told the meeting Lerwick is 40 miles into Aberdeen.  ;D   Maybe blackmail him now into a pair of youngsters this year.  ;D

I think 180 miles with a sea crossing is as good a National race as 330 miles without.  :) Maybe a sea crossing trainer for the yearlings for folks like meself who don´t like the idea of  sending them 500+ ?  Then south to 500+ as a two year old?

Well over 200 miles out from North of Scotland ... even better!!!  :P
