it all depend's how trust worthy the convoyer is their's nothink to stop him from taking pics of nice sunny days and then sending these when infact it pissing down thick fog gale force winds ect.

just my thought's  :P

u can put the date and time on the camera, i have a good one small but takes pictures and video,

i put an edit on ur post to point out that cameras have dates on them, if we had to do so, and of course if we all thought the same about convoyers as u do we would probably have to, although in the end with ur mistrust of convoyers i hope ur convoyer reads ur post, also ure reply 21, with ref to me is ure usual catty insults which u are getting away far to much on this forum in my view.

it would be great to see pics of your libs, but i notice a lot of distrusting fanciers, regarding race controllers , ass  race controllers , convoyers,,, they are voted in because the majority trust them, most of these are dedicated hard workers doing , sometimes a thankless job,yes it would be nice to see pics , but a little more trust of the fanciers voted in, to do these jobs,  would not go amiss .

and they get voted out by fanciers who do not think they are up to it

Dunno if its any good as i havnt used it yet.But couldnt you just Google earth a liberation site to see the weather?I dunno how often the pictures are refreshed but its supposed to be able to zoom right in.

Exscuse my ignorance but do convoyers get paid a wage?if so is it a good one? Not saying anyone is in it for the money just curious.

yes ours are paid, and don't know exact amount but i know it was a fair one and was increased this year again

Camerras can also work in favour of the convoyers also though, its not just a medium for fanciers to have a go at convoyers when we have a bad race.

If photos or videos are taken at the racepoint and the weather is good and the forecast that the convoyer/s have been goven is good but a bad race is encountered then all the photos etc will do is back up the convoyers decision to liberate the birds like the majority of us would have done if we where given a favourable weather forecast.

In the case of birds being fed and wathered if the convoyer/s / driver feeds and waters the birds and this is recorderd on video or photographically then the driver /convoyer has done their job and it is the fanciers that are at fault for not basket training their birds to feed and water.

So as well as aiding fanciers if convoyers are doing their jobs then they provide additional evidence of this also for douvting fanciers.

Well said P.J. ... and they would exonerate and show them in a good light MANY more times than in a bad one I'd wager.

Mr. breaman has a cracking article purely on Liberations etc. I once advocated that ALL should read it, and not just the convoyers.

I think the idea is a good one.

But I have often thought that we know absolutely nothing about what happens to our birds from the moment they leave the transporter.

Would like to see a few carry minicameras and tracking devices, if thats possible, or something like a light aircraft follow the bigger liberations and video progress.

We might learn something.

You could prolly incorporate a microchip in the ring then track it with sat nav .Imagine sitting in the pub watching the progress of the bird then running home to clock em in.Again it would be down to cost and you would need a big time Tv backer. If that happened you would see this sport take off in a big big way.

Imagine it would involve leagues area championships and loads more. so much imagination so little money :(

A problem with sending a photo back on a phone (MMS) is that the picture would only be of limited size. The max picture size caperable of MMS that I have found in my 5 mins of googling is 174 x 136 pixels (the size of the attached image), and then the picture quality may not be good due to jpg compression.

It would be possible to use a phone to email the picture; which would increase dramatically the quality of the image (and also the ease to uploading to the internet - main pro over just using a digital camera).

The problem comes as to gathering the required knowledge to make this idea workable.

One of the ideas when I launched the Mini-Sites on Pigeonbasics (idea from the_fifer) was to receive pictures of the liberation via mobile phone, and instantly be able to add them to the mini-site. This is quite possible; and if any club, fed wish to contact me about getting the right phone, linking it to the computer, or doing it directly to a website or mini-site please get in touch.

I like Bruno and Ronnie would love to see some form of microchipped rings, mini cameras or similar used on a few birds during the year. I also feel that the feedback from these to fanciers as well as conveyors and committees would be of great value.

By using these devices might help answer some of the big problems that have been going around for years.

1. Why so my young bird losses and where are they all going?

2. With the French Derby and Nationals flown into Ireland with at best most years 5-10% returns, what is happening to the other birds and why?

Are they being shot?

Are they being hawked?

Are they not facing it and flying the wrong way?

Are they getting caught in the channel and missing Ireland and drowning?

etc.

Over the past 3 years we have lost some great birds in the French nationals races birds in particular 4 birds that have taken top 20 positions in the derby the years previously from racepoints in France 40-50 miles shorter only to be lost the following years. I for one would be very interested to find out what happened to them or where they ended up, as I know they aren't bad pigeons.

Bruno Pierre Dordin use a light aircrft to follow his birds from Training, and there has, andpersumably still are data involving Micro tracking ... Seen camara's on hawks etc. so who knows ...

Tammy why not just get a contact in Kelso to phone you every Saturday with the weather, or are you planning on having longer distance racing this year maybe Tow Law on the day.

Agree with the other comments on knowledge.

Ronnie mirrors my own thoughts posted elsewhere that it could be the difference between being a dwindling tuppence'halfpenny sport and breaking into the big time, big time.

Classic Pigeon Race, live on TV. See the convoy, see the leading group, or see the satelite ´field´position.

Would appeal to today´s anoraks the computer gaming freaks and the big betting folks from the far east. Might bring in new sponsorship from the big gaming names.

And of course, new blood too, young and old.  :)
