DJ Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 this probably sounds like a silly question but can anyone tell me if tippler pigeons posses a homing instinct like racers? its just that the one i have flys for hours when out and only comes in when its nearly dark i didnt know wether it would be ok to take it training with my racers? as i said probably a silly question but thought id ask it anyway(as us woman do ;D) debbie
pigeonpete Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 im no expert mate, but used to have a tippler or 2 when i kept pigeons when i was little, and they did fly well, but i took them both about half a mile and never saw them again!
OLDYELLOW Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 they arent know for there homing instincts , but i knew a guy when i was younger that had tippler crossed racers and he used to sell them you could never settle them and always went back but id imagine if took it racing it wouldnt keep up and would get lost
Guest scoobybob Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 The homing instinct in tipplers is so poor I loose 25% of the youngsters on there first flights. Once out of site of the loft the youngsters are lost. I had one youngster about a milea way sat on a roof so I took the father of this youngster and released it hoping the youngster would follow the father home. I never saw the pair of um again... ;D
Guest casbri Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 tipplers are just for endurance flying ..they will not home
Roland Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 Well :-/ They home to their loft ;D ;D ;D But then again they go higer than they do farther I guess.
milecrosslofts Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 tipplers do it it hight not distance so keep your tipplers at home
chaz Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 I believe Van owerkerk-dekkers family of pigeons have Tippler blood in them Jacques Van Owerkerk being a successful Tippler flier before moving over to racers and incorparating the Tippler blood in to his racers http://www.herbots.com/chinese/newsflash/news35.htm
green monster Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 i have tippler crossed with racers that i have trained with my yb,s and they home quicker than my racers ive trained them 60 miles and they been ok
jimmy white Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 those of you that know" zander" might remember him winning a 60 mile race with a tumbler cross racer ;D true ;D
goshawk Posted May 29, 2009 Report Posted May 29, 2009 those of you that know" zander" might remember him winning a 60 mile race with a tumbler cross racer ;D true ;D wow do you know if it still tumbbled?
Guest ljb107 Posted May 29, 2009 Report Posted May 29, 2009 wow do you know if it still tumbbled? I know a guy that crossed a roller with a racer and i've seen it go off ranging and every now and again it will gain some height and roll. Lloyd
blaz Posted May 29, 2009 Report Posted May 29, 2009 tumbler roller x racer i had one gave it away 3 times . now if we still had xmus open from wooler less than 60 mile . i might be persuaded to bred 2 for it.
just ask me Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 this is true half either tippler or tumbler im not sure with a racer done 500 mile on the third day
stantheman Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 years ago when we first started we had some race cross tumblers from the pit bank anyway at end of our first year racing an oldboy came to the loft and said to get rid of all the mongrels as he called them so we got our neighbour to take them to devon when he went on holiday would you believe it over half of them made it back over about a week! never been trained or nowt. this chuck was over 140 miles
DJ Posted May 30, 2009 Author Report Posted May 30, 2009 thanks for the replies some interesting stuff there the tippler ive got came in as a stray last year and has been here ever since but its now paired up to one of my racers the tippler ive got obviously has homing instinct to some degree as like i said it is usually the last one home near darkness and always finds her way back after being out of sight for hours, its just a pity that she cant find her way back to hartcliff in bristol where she came from i spoke to the owner but he wont send for her and im not sure if the tippler union members have to send for their strays like we do :-/? debbie
