Nic Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 Hi, I have just come across this website and can't believe so many people want to help each other out Right here goes. I used to help my Dad keep pigeons but now I'm unable to inherite the knowledge he had. So as I'm keen on getting into the Sport I need real basic advice. Firstly I want to keep about 4-6 birds, but first need to house them. I'm very good with my hands so would love to build my own coup are there any plans on the web to start me off. Any response is much appreciated. Nic (Lancashire)
gangster Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 WELCOME NIC..YES WE EITHER HELP EACH OTHER OR KILL EACH OTHER ON HERE................
ACE LOFTS Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 i think the best floor is a chip board floor. iv got ply in 1 section and chipboard in another. the problem with a ply floor is when u scrap out bits of the floor come off so when the next time u scrap out u will hit the same spot again and a bit more comes off it ends up a mess.
gangster Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 A GARDEN SHEDS A GOOD STARTER LOFT...LOOK IN THE LOOT YOU WILL PICK 1 UP CHEAP.................
ACE LOFTS Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 then just put a sputnick on it then u will be off
ACE LOFTS Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 sorry i dont think that 6 pigeons will be enough to last u all season
Roland Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 Demolition sites are Brill, and most are next to nowt to get from.... But floor does need to be a flat surface if one intends t scrape out. Floor boards with Gripper fill then a whiten or such fills nicely.
pigeonpete Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 WELCOME NIC..YES WE EITHER HELP EACH OTHER OR KILL EACH OTHER ON HERE................ gangster is only joking nic, he is all talk lol ;D ;D welcome to the site and sport mate, once you get some birds you will never get rid!! ;D ;D

Guest Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 Welcome Nic. Have you any outbuildings like a shed or garage that you can convert? And use as much recycled wood from skips , building sites as you can.
Silverdale Lofts Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 Welcome Nic. Have you any outbuildings like a shed or garage that you can convert? And use as much recycled wood from skips , building sites as you can. Bruno its a offence to take anything out of a skip when anything has been put in a skip it belongs to the skip company.
carl Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 nic your in the rite place if you need help or advice,4/6 birds how about a converted rabbit hutch to get going.a garden shed would be easy enough
Guest Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 Bruno its a offence to take anything out of a skip when anything has been put in a skip it belongs to the skip company. Thanks for PM. Should have added that common courtesy dictates you ask owner's permission. I've 12 nest boxes constructed from chipboard which was the base of the delivery pallets used during the refitting of Homebase in Falkirk. The skip was more like an open top container, and the person in charge said that folk were carting stuff away in vans. Mine came from stripping pallets outside the skip.
Guest jason Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 Nic, I've 2 young birds in nest they will be ready in about 2 weeks. If you want them there yours, where in Lancashire are you? Jason Forgot to add, mother to these were 4th club from swainswick (169 mile) last year.
Sally McQueen Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 Welcome Nic, i not been on here long but i think it's great ;D ;D Soon make u feel like part of the gang
Nic Posted March 23, 2007 Author Report Posted March 23, 2007 I was thinking something along these lines (see attached). I was also going to keep pigeons as a hobby then as i get more experianced i was going to race. Like I say i'm at the really basic knowledge at the moment. I'm 22 and based in Trawden near Colne and Bunley. ACE LOFTS:- Please explain why they won't last. Sorry if I'm being thick.
Guest Bonzo Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 WELL NIC THEY MAY NOT LAST BECAUSE BY THE TIME YOU TRAIN THEM AND RACE THEM YOU ARE LIKELY TO LOSE A FEW AND IF YOU HAVE A BAD RACE YOU COULD LOES THEM ALL IN ONE RACE
Ian McKay Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 Hi Nic Ace loft means 6 birds will not last if you race them I think. We have a lot of losses. But if you are just going to keep as a hobby for starters they will keep you going. I have seen a lot of damage done by guy's who just kept 8 birds. The style and size is up to you birds will be happy in an orange box does not have to be fancy must be DRY. But I will guarantee it (the loft) will grow. Welcome to the forum
Guest CS Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 if you are going to keep as a hobby, Buy a garden shed...
Guest Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 Hi Nic welcome you say you can build yourself wellin the last couple of issues of the RP Red Rose lofts have had a step by step guide to a small starter loft i think they also have a website hope this helps
Nic Posted March 23, 2007 Author Report Posted March 23, 2007 I'm ok with the building itself but more complicated issues are the spudnik??? what ever this is and also the trap to keep them in once there back. The excellent drawing!! should give you an idea on how i think our lofts used to be, if this is utter crap please inform. Am i also right in saying 'coup' as in the loft???
kev01293 Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 welcome on board nic and good luck for the future
