Bonnzo, from 5 to 30 mile  should have been no bother whatsoever, it must have been the weather surely? Vic.

Yes, it's always been on my conscience, many moons ago I had a race from 500mile, and 2 weeks beforehand, one of the marking room  lawyers, offered me a bet . I nominated my bird and he his, unfortunately my bird had injured itself before the race, and  I replaced the injured bird with a little yearling hen

that had won previously flying 15 hours on the wing. The 500 miler turned out a smash, with very few pigeons in the Amal within 3 days.  Anyhow this little hen turned up on the third day to take 2nd club and a Amal position, I clocked her before I went to work,  about 6.45(she was beaten by 1 minute by the way) Returning from work for lunch around noon, she was in deaths throes. I must admit, I cried. I think she was poisoned myself. But here lies a message to all. treasures are pleasures, so look after 'em. vic   :'(

but this is one of the pitfalls of sending your birds with somebody else, dont have any problems doing so with old birds as i know they are going about 40 miles and most times is from the same place and the guy that takes them is capable of judging when to let them go , he does not keep doos but he knows in bad weather to either keep them till eather improves or he will call and ask me what to do if he is unsure , but the young birds never go with anybody but me because if somebody wants to take a chance with their own birds and yours are with them well you have no control, i mean i have taken a few chances with my own but would hate to do it with somebody elses birds

HI VIC THE WEATHER ON THE DAY WAS GREAT BUT I DONT THINK I HAVE EXPLAINDED IT PROPERLY .WE HAD STARTED OUR YOUNG BIRDS OFF A FEW WEEKS EARLIER THAN NORMAL AS MY FATHER HAD ONLY STARTED LAST YEAR SO WAS ONLY RACING YOUNG BIRDS SO IT WAS THE 1ST TIME WE HAD SENT THEM WITH THIS BLOKE  WE WERE THE ONLY ONES THAT SENT YOUNG ON THAT DAY AND THE ONLY ONES THAT WERE GOING TO THE 1ST STOP WITH HIM WHICH IS ABOUT 10 TO 15 MILES AWAY SO THEY WERE IN A CRATE ON THERE OWN. THE PROBLEM WAS THAT HE HAD FORGOTTEN ABOUT THEM SO WHEN IT CAME TO HIS LAST STOP THEY WERE STILL ON THE TRAILER WHICH  AN EXTRA 30 MILES OR EVEN MORE AWAY SO THAT WOULD MAKE IT SAY ABOUT 45 - 50 MILES AND THEY THEN WENT UP WITH THE OLDER BIRDS .

I had a training van once and me and my wife you train quite a few peoples pigeons from around the peebles area ,a lot of guys were asking to take them farther one day we had about 500 birds and went to Kelso it was a great sunny day for it and we let them up the pigeons circled a couple of times and headed for home as we sat and had our tea the next thing they came right back over the top of us and the next thing i noticed was this dark coulored bird going right into them and catching one by the wings and carrying it away the pigeons scattered in all directions many losses that day i can still c it in ma head the we pigeon being held by the wings and still trying to flap them it was really a sad sight for me and one that is all to common now

The worst experience I've had was settling a team of YB's one year. Due to work commitments I couldn't let them out as babies like I normally do so I decided to wait until their eye had changed, a system some of my Club members used with great success. I made a pen to fit on the loft so thet had a good view and waited for the right day. My fellow members had told me what to expect, once given their freedom the YB's usually fly all over the place landing on roofs but eventually they all settle to the loft.

I wated for the right evening, unfortunately we were having a fine sunny spell, I was hoping for a dull evening, I eventually had to bite the bullet and give them their freedom, I had them all on the loft roof giving them tit-bits when suddenly they exploded off the shed, spun into the air, kitted up, and away they went never to be seen again. I lost 25 out of 30 YB's (5 flew straight back into the loft). Never again!

ive got 2

the first one was in 05 my second year with yb's had 40 all loft flying well so had them training in stages and all was going well and as i was on the caudwell system with the old birds thought id train the ybs from the 12 mile marker as i did with the ob's, it was a nice clear afternoon so up they went, sat out in the garden till night fell and nothing, next day got 5 back and that was it  then the phone started ringing had 7 reported between essex and newcastle and i live in lincolnshire, had a busy few days fetching them back got them home and sorted so moved the lib site all was going well till racing started, after 3 races only had 2 left, since then i have been past here and only just noticed a mobile phone mast hid behind tress 1 mile from lib site

the second one was last year with yb's, bred 30 after training and sorting out started the programme with 20 all homong and trapping like bullets from any distance, first race came decided to split them 10 to first race 10 to second (same lib site) the first 10 went on there first race,

on sat got 1 back from the 10 in race time and that was all none back none reported, second race 10 went again and about 30 mins before ETA the heavens opened to the point of 5m visability got 5 back very wet and agin no more back none reported, third race sent all 6 got 5 home decided that'll do for them so stopped, not seen any of them or had any reported since

NOW WHERE DID I SEE THIS BEFORE  ;)

Some years ago, playing " catch up, " my youngsters were behind everyone else's and although they were flying around home, they were not "ranging".  Because they were behind, I took 16, two miles from home with a clear view of local landmark (a water tower ) and let em' go.  Lost 11.  Lesson learned from that, never again will youngsters be trained unless I see em' ranging, even if I miss a race or two.

same opinion here , would not train birds till they have been ranging for a while.

now its your turn for the most thankless job in the world tam!! GOOD LUCK ;)

Well I felt after what I had said about our control team last year that I should stand up and be counted, and  as you say it is the worse job out but you just have to try your best and be careful and if there is a doubt the birds welfare must come first, well it should anyway and we all know this is not the case everywhere

Same as most, had a few bad YB training spins, but ended up with good birds from them generally. One thing I learnt from training YBs is to never take them on a afternoon (after 6pm) until they had been trained well. All it takes is a batch to take them 50miles or so north and they have no chance of returning like they would if they had been trained earlier in the day!! 530-6am is the best I think.

My worst experience was losing a pigeon that had won our longest channel race in 2002, and in 2003 he was lost from a 30mile training toss (obviously hawked). + also lost his son from the same training point a few weeks later  :'(
