chickadee Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 Does anyone have plans/drawings or advice for building a loft? My better half could build it no problem, but would like any advice or help; ie. best type of roof, nesting boxes, ventilation, flooring etc. We will post photos of its construction in stages. This will also help others who are just starting out or progressing to a loft. :) :)
Tony C Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 If you haven't already put a concrete base down, will save you a lot of grief in the long run.
jimmy white Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 in my opinion the main thing would be to have the loft bone dry with plenty ventilation, look forward to see how things go ,, good luck
chickadee Posted March 29, 2007 Author Report Posted March 29, 2007 If you haven't already put a concrete base down, will save you a lot of grief in the long run. Cannot put a concrete base down as this area is a mass of mature tree roots, we will be building it on a hardwood sleeper frame/joists mounted on stilts, may be able to screed the floor. Thanks. :)
Lance Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 http://www.uplandbirddog.com/training/loft.html Seems to be something along the idea that you described.
stew 75 Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 if there is other fanciers near you go a long to see them take a camera with you and ask them if you can take photos of inside and outside of loft if there is a few lofts near you may get some ideas from the photos you take all the best with your venture
chickadee Posted March 29, 2007 Author Report Posted March 29, 2007 Thanks for sending these pics Lance, I will show them to my better half and see what he thinks. :) :)
tubbles Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 I would not even try to explain how to build a loft but one important part is the amount of birds you want to keep in it. You should, like was mentioned above go and see other fanciers lofts. This will show you how big the sections have to be. Make sure that you measure the widowhood boxes then you can allow for how many sets you want to put in. also the perches need measuring and look to ventilation on other lofts. I personally would suggest using plywood for the outside of the loft and for the front you can pretty it up in whatever you find pleasing to the eye. You need light and ventilation getting in. If space is plentiful, make it 8ft from front to back then you can put a corridor in it. keeps the birds calm and you can keep your records of pairing and other stuff indoors. good luck

chickadee Posted March 29, 2007 Author Report Posted March 29, 2007 Would anybody in Fife/Lothian or in the surrounding area mind if we come and have a look at your loft, for ideas only. :) :)

Lance Posted March 30, 2007 Report Posted March 30, 2007 Thanks for these pics. Can i ask why is it that birds are detered from sitting on the roof of the loft? So that during a race, the birds don't just hang out on the roof, as they can't be clocked until in the loft.
stevebelbin Posted March 30, 2007 Report Posted March 30, 2007 If you PM your address I could send you a dimensioned drawing ive done on Cad of my loft + others Ive drawn. Roland Posted March 30, 2007 Report Posted March 30, 2007 A wire cage with nest boxes and a false roof a foot above extending about 12 - 15 inches out all the way around. But instead of all the sides bing wire mesh use 'Air Vent instead up ti the first roof of wire mesh. Airy, great for birds and have 2 foot nest boxes that show the foot square at the front... they go back 2 foot.
