ken Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 hi can any body tell me how long do you put the hens with the cocks on basketing night
Roland Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 Hi Ken, bit surprises as 'Distance guys' don't normally fly Widowerhood.
PIGEON_MAN Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 I never put my hens in on basketing night, just a nest bowl for about 10 minutes.
ken Posted April 12, 2007 Author Report Posted April 12, 2007 hi mate there not my birds there the ones tommy gave me when he gave up they have never been paired up this year i am going to run all the hens with them on friday night but how long do i leave them in with the cocks
madmaxlofts Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 i put my hens in till they tread the cock in the nest bowl then there straight in the basket 2-3 mins at most the further they go the longer they stay in up to 300 miles 2-3 mins max remember you cant do this every week you have to do something a bit different every week or the cocks get wise
Roland Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 Ken a friend of mine namely Frank Bristow has fantastic sucess just flying the hens like that. He takes the hens up the road about 3- 5 miles on basketing night and the cock birds in the pens waiting. But they don't tread etc. He - like me- swears that the hens are better that cocks any day. I believe that on hard days / distance the hens are far more genuine.
ken Posted April 12, 2007 Author Report Posted April 12, 2007 dose it matter if they tread the hen or not
tubbles Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 Ken these answers have gone away from your question, they are all talking about racing hens and you are racing the cocks so do not let the cocks tread the hens as this is what they are supposed to race back to do. I put the bowls in and open the boxes for the cocks to go in and call the hens and when they settle in bowl, put the hens in the box and open it fully. some people let the hens fly up to the box but that causes all kinds of problems at times with them going to wrong boxes and stuff. I Place the hens in the box and that avoids fights and also stops the cocks coming out of the box. then leave them but be careful because some of the hens are easily pleased shall we say and drop em too quickly. By the way make sure that they have had all they can eat and give them a drink too before showing them to cocks. there's nothing worse than getting them ready all week and then seeing them scrounging for food i know from experience Good luck matey
