REDCHEQHEN Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 Make sure there are no gaps in loft for them to get in - and use 1/4" mesh - I was assured that mice could squeeze through 1/2" mesh, :o :-/ PS Got mine off e-bay last year, it was cheaper than in the shops, but the shop gave good information - just didn't get my custom ;D
ACE LOFTS Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 im sh1t scared of mice, and im not freighted to admit it to. if i see 1 im off like a shot ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
rockinrick Posted April 12, 2007 Author Report Posted April 12, 2007 i think i have family near by > > :(
Guest Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 You've an Achilles Heel somewhere - mine was a single panel of 1" mesh above entry doors which I have cured by pinning another 1/4" mesh behind it. Still wasn't satisfied tho, I've 10 bags of corn stored in plastic bins and wasn't taking any chances - I've fitted two electronic Pest Repellers. Sorted.
pigeonpete Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 i think i have family near by > > :( sorry to hear that rick, need to get rid as soon as mate, paratyphoid looms mate if you dont get rid of the blighters..... and its not nice believe me!! dont wont to scare you or owt...... just get rid, i used the live traps and had 7 in 1 day in them 2 years ago, never have a problem with them now, dont leave any uneaten food and dont use straw for deep litter!! good luck rick

rockinrick Posted April 12, 2007 Author Report Posted April 12, 2007 thru avery , i have door on side of the loft which is giving threm access
jimmy white Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 i allways keep a rentokill trap from homebase, its a clear plastic container , with entry in and enty out, the poison cannot get to any birds etc , i keep it on the loft floor at all times , never seen [or smelt] any mice,, worst things for paratyphoid, salmonella ,with devastating results ,,,,and long lasting ones too
rockinrick Posted April 12, 2007 Author Report Posted April 12, 2007 cheers jimmy m8 , i guess its too late for birds ? i am so annoyed as i new i should never had built avery so low on floor with such big gauge mesh . cheers all i know wat i have to do as i dont want it spreading to my other birds and lofts ,its 2 years of getting the stock jus right down the drain .
jimmy white Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 had this many years ago rick, and know the worry and consequencies, of this dreaded desease,, the carriers are the worst, as you cannot see it in them, , hope you solve things out,,,but mice ,,,out [they pee every 10 mins or so , and if birds pick at this , or on the grub , its trouble,,,
madmaxlofts Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 what if you put poison down and before it dies it poos alover and the pigeons eat it?would it harm the birds?
rockinrick Posted April 12, 2007 Author Report Posted April 12, 2007 yes jimmy m8 will it spread thru birds ,,,, i e i have jus taken some chicks outta stock loft an put them with chicks from racing loft also i have moved my hens from stock loft to hens section in big loft ?
DOVEScot Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 Get a margarine tub and cut a small hole in it, get some antifreeze and dip some bread in it. But a brick on top of the tub so the birds can't get to it. Or get a milk bottle and put the bread/antifreeze in iy and lie on its side Place them in and around the lofts Worked well in the pits

Guest Posted April 13, 2007 Report Posted April 13, 2007 Have you tried using a small piece of chocolate on the trap? A bit of mars bar, choc bikky, etc.....this usually works!
DOVEScot Posted April 13, 2007 Report Posted April 13, 2007 hi dont want to bring up the past but could have been the cause of your birds dieing a few months back?? No but I don't mind as I was quite open about it, We lost most of our birds to salmonella last year, we had the birds post mortemed by DEFRA and as we have a small holding with other livestock including chickens so we had to get the all clear from DEFRA before we could eat or sell eggs, which we now have. We also stay on the edge of the country so eradicating all the things that carry disease would be impossible Our salmonella was brought in by a pigeon I bought from a guy, it was a carrier who showed no signs of any ailment. He has since lost all his stock because he did not want to involve DEFRA Ailments are present in all creatures and when you vaccinate you put in parts of the ailment so they can build up antibodies. The ailment comes to the fore for a number of reasons. New strains...so quarantine, Stress, don't over vacinate. We now have regular checks and glad to say we have the all clear We always quarantine new birds, we have never lost a bird again we send a live bird and samples of droppings to DEFRA Your always taking a chance when using any poison because if the the vermin pick it up on their feet they can spread it about, therefore a chance other creatures picking it up. Electronic repellents are great if you have a power source. Traps are good only if you can check them regular Thanks for your concern but we now have good healthy birds, sadly we had to learn the hard way
