Okitsme Posted May 15, 2007 Report Posted May 15, 2007 Hi Peeps, I have a silly question I know but what are the fake eggs used for? Thanks David
Roland Posted May 15, 2007 Report Posted May 15, 2007 So they don't hatch and keep the parents quiet and settled.
Guest Posted May 15, 2007 Report Posted May 15, 2007 Used for several things: Mainly I think to control your numbers after you have reared all the youngsters you want for the year. Birds will sit for around 25 days so the hen will lay only once per month usually on or around the same date every month. If you took her eggs away straight away, the pair would go straight back down but this could cause the hen a lot of harm as allowing the hen to lay so soon after her last round could damage her oviduct so preventing her from being used for future breeding.
Okitsme Posted May 15, 2007 Author Report Posted May 15, 2007 Thanks Bruno, I did have a sneaky suspicion that it was to keep the hen from laying more eggs. Another question about eggs and chicks: Is it true that if you take one of the two eggs away the remaining egg will hatch and the baby will be better off being on its own (being fed better by both parents thus getting a better start in life). Sorry one more question: What do you guys do when one chick is smaller than the other?
Okitsme Posted May 15, 2007 Author Report Posted May 15, 2007 Thanks Rose. Just getting all knowledge database up to scratch.
Guest Silverwings Posted May 15, 2007 Report Posted May 15, 2007 plastic eggs are better used filled with sand the extra weight stops them getting knocked out of the nest , when hens are sitting between 12 and 18 days clipping a large beatle or worm inside the eggs prior to race marking ,can trigger the hen into thinking her eggs are due to hatch and aid her race motivation , have also drilled lots of tiny holes in them and filled them with insect repeling herbs such as lavender and wormwood helps keep the mite out of the nests and increase their contentment when sitting .....ray
timbarra Posted May 15, 2007 Report Posted May 15, 2007 okitsme, do not worry about the smaller youngster, it will catch up and they are not really runts just hatched a day later so it will catch up.
Guest shadow Posted May 15, 2007 Report Posted May 15, 2007 if one young bird is alot smaller than the other it is best being disposed of as it will always be a weakling
REDCHEQHEN Posted May 15, 2007 Report Posted May 15, 2007 if one young bird is alot smaller than the other it is best being disposed of as it will always be a weakling or it could be a hen perhaps
Roland Posted May 15, 2007 Report Posted May 15, 2007 if one young bird is alot smaller than the other it is best being disposed of as it will always be a weakling Well I believe that most that aren't going to make the grade, or have somethin not quie righ, then the parents take care of the problem. I also blieve that the hen is smaller - usually - and the best bird out is a little hen. JMO
Guest Posted May 15, 2007 Report Posted May 15, 2007 I hand reared a YB from 2 days old last year, and it now has the top perch in the cock section, dominates the floor and is a bit of a thug...hardly a weakling given such a poor start. As for birds sitting plastic eggs from a showing point of view it is a great aid to condition,a system I often use.Birds usually reach peak condition after sitting 11 or 12 days

But about the breeders of the exhibition birds, their birds are constantly laying and getting their eggs fostered, this way a breeder can get the maximum clutches to pick a possible good won from, is this a form of cruelty if what you say is true about damaging the oviduct, can anyone verify, elaborate or help with this please
jimmy white Posted May 17, 2007 Report Posted May 17, 2007 yes they do come in differant sizes ,, but usualy not a big differance as far as dummy eggs go there are many uses , i,e, keep a pair sitting instead of driving and laying again ,,,handy to let a hen sit well over due to hatch , then when its about to forsake the eggs , stick a pair of 3 day old ybs, makes them dead keen then [if your a keen yb racer , you can do this a few weeks on the trot,, back to the eggs on a sat.. again with ybs you can fill a plastic dummy egg with a marble, keep putting an extra one under it , till it has about 5 ,ittl keep trying to tuck the eggs under it ,making it keen,,,,,,handy just get them sitting if their eggs have been broken, if youve earmarked them for a race ,,,many handy uses
