Getting them to eat isn't a problem. Getting them to learn to go to the drinker is the hardest bit. I usually trickle the water in from about 18 inches so it makes a splashing noise, it attracts their attention and usually no problems after that. Once 1 or 2 start drinking the others soon follow. Hope this helps.

Many the ole timers used race days for them to be feed and watered in te basket. Sees to make sense.

Just to add to that, what I do is basket them late on friday night especially if it is their first time as being near dark they don't go nuts in the crate like they do in the day. When I go in the loft in the morning they are all calm as you like. Then as they have not had food or water all night I first put the food in the basket drinkers and the usually have no trouble finding that and scoffing the lot. Then once they have eaten it all up they will be dying for a drink then I splash the water in the troughs from a height and they usually all go straight in for the water no probs.

Then what I do once I start training I basket them up at night and first light go training taking the troughs and water with me, and every time I take them they get a drink before I liberate. By the time racing comes my youngsters will be first to take a drink then fall asleep in the fed crates as they practically live in them lol!!

the main thing is ,,,dont overcrowd the basket , and theyll  less stressfull , weekends a good time to do this , i used to put 8 in at a time [put differant colour rubbers on ] , i would leave them without the drinker for a while ,after being fed , then let them hear the sound of running the water in to the drinkers, they would soon drink.
