wilsric Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 Hi There, I'm just starting out, and as my wife isn't keen on the idea of the pigeons, I was wondering if I could race competitively with white pigeons? She'd go for that easier as she thinks that they're prettier and more 'dove-like' I was going to build a starter loft (http://www.redroselofts.com/starter_loft.htm). I'm assuming I can get around 24 birds in there and leave enough room to keep them healthy. As that'll likely be the only loft I had fir a while, thought I could eventually have 5 pairs of old birds and a dozen or so youngsters. So if I was to get the white birds (which seem harder to come by) Could I win with them?
thunderboult Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 hi wilsric you can win with any colour pigeon but how will your wife feel when they come home red?
Guest Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 White logans and white busshearts are very popular and certainly hold their own racing wise, your biggest problem will be getting hold of some as they are in great demand.
jimmy white Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 yes, white pigeons can be just as competative ,,if you get the right winning blood lines to begin with
Tony C Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 Having done the checking for the first 20 positions each week in my federation for the last 3 years I cant recall one instance where a white pigeon has made the result.
Yorkshire Lass Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 Yes, they certainly are! I started off with Dovey who won Dunbar but then was sadly lost. Thankfully his son Frostie has taken over and has one win and two seconds to his name with other top ten cards. His daughter Icicle also won and had top ten cards! Dad and me have great fun every Saturday betting if Frostie will be in the top ten!
tskyes Posted June 13, 2007 Report Posted June 13, 2007 1st y/b race last year i was 1st club 1st fed with a white logan hen.
stevebelbin Posted June 13, 2007 Report Posted June 13, 2007 The only problem would be is they attract hawks as their easy to pick out. Try and get some bonny pied pigeons, I have a Cheq Pd in my loft that people seem to pick when they look in. Basically any with a bit of white in and she will like them ;D ;D ;D
Peckedhen Posted June 13, 2007 Report Posted June 13, 2007 Dont seem to see many racing nowdays knew of few white burghers years ago that did some winning perhaps they all making money out of them using them for weddings ;D I've got white Logans (not made any money out of them Rose, though I guess they just about earn their feed ) A friend is trying a couple in the basket this YB season, I'll let you know how they do!!
swilcox Posted June 14, 2007 Report Posted June 14, 2007 Mate Start on the right foot and take the question of colour and strain from your head. Decide what type of racing you prefer and what distance ( i would always recommend sprint/middle to start with) and find someone who is winning consistantly in your area who would be willing to sell you 6-8 ybs for a £100 or so!!! Learn, learn and learn and then take the next step!! Stuart
Okitsme Posted June 14, 2007 Report Posted June 14, 2007 They better competitive as I have just bought two. :-/ :-/ :-/
timbarra Posted June 14, 2007 Report Posted June 14, 2007 you have more money than sense mate........... :-/ ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D :-/
T_T Posted June 14, 2007 Report Posted June 14, 2007 Don't know or hear of too many white pigeons at the top of the sheet but a pigeon named VIRGO comes to mind.
Guest Posted June 14, 2007 Report Posted June 14, 2007 Exactly T_T, also the Camiel Cardons, Roland Janssens, Rapido Busschaerts. Theres whites in all of those that do OK. There are good and bad in all "Strains" and colours! Try them, if they don't work out thats the way it goes, but if they do...........well, there will be plenty wanting to buy them mate! Good luck and don't get down hearted or dissapointed with colours! They must brighten the loft up a bit if nowt else! Good luck!

Chatrace Posted June 14, 2007 Report Posted June 14, 2007 They can win and do. They also can be used for wedding and make a few bucks to feed the color birds :
little sam Posted June 14, 2007 Report Posted June 14, 2007 MY GRANDAD WON THE NATIONAL WITH WHITE PIGEON A COPLE YEARS BACK UNFORTUNATLY HE DIED AFTER HE WON IT HE THOUGHT THAT HAWKS WOULNDT GO AFTER THEM HAHAHA WHAT A SILLY MAN BUT A FUNNY 1 I SURE MISS HIM I WOULD SAY BUSSHEARTS AND THE LADDIES LIKE REDS GET A FEW OF THEM IN THERE M8 ;) ;D
jimmy white Posted June 14, 2007 Report Posted June 14, 2007 if you look at the ratio of white birds sent to a race in the uk compared to other colours ,,the odds are against them ,purely because their out numbered by most other colours, but there have been a few good white racing pigeons,, white ones , not my cup of tea, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder
drewskitou Posted June 24, 2007 Report Posted June 24, 2007 delbar, is there a strain of white pigeons ?
peterpau Posted June 24, 2007 Report Posted June 24, 2007 My friend and me bought three white delbars last year. They certainly looked the part, and were the best looking pigeons at Walsall young bird sale last year. None left now though.
Guest Posted June 24, 2007 Report Posted June 24, 2007 ;Dhomer49 has a great story about a white pigeon during the war white vision it was called and it saved so many men a think maybe if he comes on and sees this he will post it up for all to read ;D ;D
