Guest Posted July 7, 2007 Report Posted July 7, 2007 DEFRA is focussed only on continental europe and only because there have been AI outbreaks there. Not so on Faroe Islands even although it is on the icelandic migratory route across the top of the world into Britain. It is worth asking our own Scottish Executive for dispensation, if there was a big enough interest in going there.
Guest Hjaltland Posted July 7, 2007 Report Posted July 7, 2007 At this point in time, this year may be the last for a ferry connection through to the Faroes for some time because Smyril line are pulling out of Shetland as a port af call from next year. The route was Denmark, Norway, Shetland Faroe and Iceland. Shetland has been unprofitable for the company so they are pulling the plug from next year. It remains to be seen what happens as there is a deal of politics (and money) involved.
JAS Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 Hope they go as near the coast as pos. But i think it will be Maidstone as they would have to get measurements for othe lib sites.
DECKY Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 The majority of people I have spoke to , dont really care where we go , as long as we get a half decent race , with birds getting home
square_peg Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 THINK WE ARE KIDDING OURSELVES IF WE REALLY THINK WE ARE GOING NORTH ;D ;D
me Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 THINK WE ARE KIDDING OURSELVES IF WE REALLY THINK WE ARE GOING NORTH ;D ;D It would be interesting but Peggy lad to see how the liberation would go if it was great weather down to about 3 miles south of Dunfermline and then a belt of rain from there down to the border do you think they would get up?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

me Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 NAW ;D ;D Correct again Sammy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guest Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 Take your point about it not going to happen, Peggy, but looks like same could be said in future years with continental racing, 2 out of 3 cancelled? this year. Idea was basically born from chat-room conversation last year with Hooky from Australia who told us they change their route every year so that the whole club gets a square deal, and prevents the same type of 'moans' evident in this thread too. 'Shetland Kenny' reckons the birds face 200 miles of open water before Lerwick pigeons hit landfall in north of scotland. A water race with a difference. Boat in North Sea or Atlantic Ocean 400 miles offshore east or west on 'midline' Scotland distances to all parts of Scotland wouldn't vary much more than 40 miles. Since there is no landfall between liberation at sea and Scotland, birds can't make any other landfall and can't therefore bring anything into the country, so no silly argument to win with DEFRA and no stop-go-stop from DEFRA with our race program.

Good Bruno lad whit aboot the St Kilda classic its got a ring?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
jimmy white Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 ive often advocated that bruno,, go direct east from edinburgh will take you to the tip of denmark which is about 400 miles of north sea , most say the birds wouldnt do it , but how can anyone know unless its tried , i for one would beleive good birds would do it ,,,,same distance to eyemouth as it would be to aberdeen, , glasgow district would get full miles overfly from edinburgh approx 40 mies, remember the irish birds are crossing two seas ,,,who knows?
square_peg Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 Good Bruno lad whit aboot the St Kilda classic its got a ring?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO HOW FAR IS THAT THEN? :-/
frank-123 Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 a bit of hard race that 400 miles of water jimmy dont think you would get many reported though
jimmy white Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 ;D ;D ;Di think the light house keeper would become a pigeon keeper ;D ;D ;D
Jumbo Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 [Me said ] It would be interesting but Peggy lad to see how the liberation would go if it was great weather down to about 3 miles south of Dunfermline and then a belt of rain from there down to the border do you think they would get up?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why not as we have to put up with that most of the time in the north section
Guest Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 SO HOW FAR IS THAT THEN? :-/ Think the racing pigeons that landed in St Kilda last year thought it too far, SNH brought the ones that survived the predating gulls back by boat to Harris. Talking about NW of Oban, and 40 miles west again of next most westerly island - hardly 'midline'.

Anyway Rennes and Nantes favored the east for donkeys years!!
doos r us Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 dont see what all the talks about cant race from europe get em to lerwick get em to ireland i thought it was a homing pigeon called a racer cause they went a bit faster were sending y/b north rd this year you telling me they wont home south rd next year give me a break
Guest Greig the doo Drysdale Posted July 9, 2007 Report Posted July 9, 2007 Scotland is big enough to have the birds raced north if you use the islands so why can we not do that in hte future?
GUTTY HEN Posted July 9, 2007 Author Report Posted July 9, 2007 Looks like eastbourne or hastings is the front runners for the snfc race in two weeks time. This would be 400mls to falkirk whats the view on this ? The snfc would get the measurements at the snfc cost if the race is from any of the race points which i have given you.
Guest Greig the doo Drysdale Posted July 9, 2007 Report Posted July 9, 2007 sounds good to me Scott anywhere is better than no where
