Recommended Posts

i have just read the advertisement on the back page of last weeks bhw, it is about louella selling redundant older stock birds.  the set price is £35 each for a bird, i think it is well worth taking the chance on these older stock birds,

Has anyone bought older stock birds off louella?

was speaking to a guy in chat room last night he hasnt had no luck. The old cock has been there a few weeks now and he hasnt cooed or nothing and showed no interest in pairing

well i dont know but its a case of pot luck wether u get anything out of them.remember wot it says reduntant stock, to get the volume of y/bs for sale each year they must be like battery hens.

in other words i think they would have been having more of a sex life then a popular curbside  princess. ;D

but i have had some older stock b4 from them and some bred some good birds....not all!.

think its like any other sale u buy from..u pay ur money u take the chance....paul :)

Well lads I think there are some bargains there to be had, there's also some dross. If you'tre going make sure if your not a good judge to take someone who is.

I went last year with my partner Henry and picked up 3 hens and a cock, which I believed would all breed decent pigeons for £35 good value, three are birds that will breed a couple of winners, though we have kiled one an Ebony aardencockcause we didn't have the room for and nobody would have bought it, even though I have a YB left that was badly damaged by the hawk that I think will score at 15/1600 yds across the pond if we get any fast ones and if we get over.

But we did pick up one special hen we thought, a wildermesch of Jim Smiths breeding (no pedigree though!!) and that bred us a 1st West of England Continental Amal winner this YB season (and its still there). She is being paired this year to a cock with no pedigree and one and a half wings, (hawk attack)!!! And I reckon they will be a goldmine (how's that for sticking me neck out, there's quite a few trying to chop it off i know!!!! serves me right but I know what I know!!)

If I lived nearer I would have gone to them again confident that here are some gems there, but as in any sale you go to, there'll only be the odd few gems but at £35 much better value than £350 at auction 0r £650 in a private treaty.

If your not sure of your selection abilities why not go to the top fancier in a club 20 miles north of you, if you fly south road and vice versa if you fly north. Why? well because you know the birds are capable of flying your route, it takes different types to fly in to different areas. Then rely on him to breed you some YB even wait for the third/fourth round from stock if you can afford,or why not buy eggs I have done this in the past and had some success with them. But build the relationship up. The trouble with the internet is that you can't do that. You have no idea what the other person on here is like, you may have formed an opinion that he is an horrible git but when you actually meet, its a different ball game. You at times have to have trust and faith but go to the best fanciers either those winning or those that you know breed winners for others.

Just trying to be helpful

I have been asking to buy eggs from this site, nobody is interested.Don t know why

This may seem a lame question but how long will the egg's keep without being sat or do you have to use an incubator?

Also on the original topic my uncle bought an old pair from Louella a few years back and only got one young bird from them .The young un went on to score three first before being put to stock.

I think the traditional way of sending eggs by post is to cut a loaf of bread in half and place the eggs between the two halfs, i suppose you have to scoop out a little bit of bread to accommodate the eggs? I've never tried it meself! maybe somebody will enlighten us?

Well I've never sent eggs in the post!! I have always collected, memory is a terible thing I used to know the answer of how to store them. I have always collected in an egg carton filled with cotton wool. If memory serves me I believ you can keep for 28 days if not sat, i.e. the eggs will need to be taken away and not sat, then you turn them ecvery ady (maybe twice a day??)

Anthony I would suggest you look to buy the first round of eggs from a good fancier's race birds. Invariably most fanciers will put their race team down to catch the second round of stock birds and float these under the race team and dispose of th race eggs. If you went along and offered say £5 a pair of eggs or maybe £50 for the team say 12 widowhood pairs you may be successful. Ask now and if agreed you can then time your birds to go down in time to take the eggs. When you pick them up make sure to record which pairs they are from. So I would mark the egg box 1,2 3 (6 egg box), I'd then on anote pad make a note of the pair put in to part 1 pof the egg box and so on. Then when you float them you can record what pair they came from, that way if you are successful with any you know what they are. You can go back and tell the fancier the good news which he will appreciate and you will be more likely to get more form him if you want.

I was interesed what invinsible spirit said re.like battery chickens. I have been driving past Louella on the M1 every week night at about 11.15p.m. at night and you can see all the flights with the lights on, and back past at 6.00 a.m. in the morning the lights are on again this has been happening for a few weeks now, they must be breeding virtually non stop to get all those Y.B. out so early, and with all of kits of Y.B. on offer all season.

re. eggs - with chickens, ducks etc you can pick the eggs out of the field for weeks after and as long as the hen has had a cock with her and the eggs are fertile you can then put these in a incubator and hatch them out. we often do this. we have had geese, chickens, ducks etc and they all used to think my little sister was thier mother. it is really good really, turning them each day and then watching them hatch. with these birds though they are able toeat on their own as soon as they are born, well within a day or 2.

Didn't realise they were down the Rhondda on the 30th, may well try and get across there just to see the standard or even pick up something nice if pos!
