Ok here's my problem.

After i moved house all my birds got out and i lost all my stockers apart from one pair.

I have 11 hens and 16 cocks (ive borrowed another 5 hens to even the numbers out)

from the 11 hens and 16 cocks they have all completed the young bird season and all flew reasonably well .My problem is how do i decide what to use for stock birds and what to use as racer's.Do i just race them all next year after taken a full round of youngsters then decide after the next old bird season or do i just breed of my racers each year and have no stock birds.I was looking at have 35 youngsters this year so one round would put me on 32 and i will be happy with that.I think i'm answering my own question here :).

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Also i dont want to buy anymore birds after the money i spent and lost on the last lot.

I have reduced my stock pigeons and although I have also introduced 4 new pigeons, I don't intend to fall into the same trap as before and before they ever become stock they and their offsping will be tried & tested.

I've mainly yearlings and young birds but in 2008 I intend breeding only from 'best' on best YB to best YB basis, and only from yearlings which bred those 'best' YBs.

I've bred enough 'paper' rubbish and it stops this year.  >:(

WHAT DIFFERANCE DOES THAT MAKE? YOU KNOW YOUR BEST DOOS JUST THE SAME AS I KNOW MINE AND BRUNO KNOWS HIS!!!

thats right he only asked the man a simple question :) :) :) :)

Tammy a very valid question, Bruno may have super birds to breed out of but if the birds are not performing its the equivalent of breeding out of paper birds

What performances did you get from this years" best" Bruno ?

The only performances I could measure was those back to the loft. The birds I have left were all within the first 4 back to the loft, 3 or 4 times.

As far as race performances were concerned - nowhere, my best position was 8th club @ 157 miles. I had 8 away and was 40 minutes behind the winner, the race was won by 35 minutes his returns at clocks 1/30; the second name on the sheet had 3 in front of me, his 1st was 5 mins in front of mine, so he had put 40 away against my 8 to get 3 in front of me; the 3rd name on the sheet also had 3 in front of me, his 1st was 1 minute in front of mine and he had put 80 away against my 8 to get 3 in front of me. Their returns at clocks [2 hours after you time your first pigeon] were dreadful - single figures if I remember correctly - I was sitting with 4/8.

The folk 9th, 10th & 11th in the race had also 30+ each away, and had been beating me in previous weeks. So thought I had a chance of going higher the following week, but could only get 3 in any fit state moultwise to go. Only got 1 on day, nowhere, but got one against manys in club & feds none, and other 2 next day.

to get back to the orginal post this is where the small back door loft is at a disadvantage all you can do is race them hard for a couple of seasons and the breeders will show them self (thats if they are still there ) but to justify any pair and give them a fair chance i think you have to breed 6 good y/b from each for 2 years and race them hard even good breeders dont gaurentee good racers all the time you will proberbly find the same as me when something starst to show its to late youve lost at least one of the parents but you have the blood to carry on like me this year i bred 6 from a chris gordon pair i bought gave one away started training the five lost the lot from a very bad toss i still think iam on the right track with this pair just had very bad luck but if the same happens next year i dont care who they came from , they wont be kept
